Harry Potter Wand & Spell Books
We dressed our nephew/grandson Tyler up for Halloween in a Hogwarts robe and handmade scarf. But no outfit is completely without a wand and spell books!
Hot Glue Elements to Cover & Spine of Book
Raw Materials:
- Books—the first one I chose because it has the wonderful coat of arms embossing on the cover which I wanted to highlight. The second is the music book. I thought it was a fitting way to save this particular book
- Cardboard elements, stickers, upholstery tacks with the point removed, other flat items as desired
Purchased or from personal craft stash
- Oil rubbed bronze spray paint
- Mod Podge
- Heritage handcrafts Gold stencil paint or Rub ’n Buff in silver and/or gold. Any metallic paint should work
- Hot glue gun/glue sticks
- Large Binder clips
- Large scrap paper/tape to cover inside pages
- White Tissue paper
- Brush & rags for gold paint or Rub ’n Buff
Mod Podge Tissue Paper to Front & Back of Book
Lay book on top of tissue paper, rough cut to size. Lightly crumple tissue paper. Mod Podge book covers, press tissue paper firmly over & into elements on cover. Let dry.
Cover Pages & Paint
Once dry, cover the pages with paper & seal with tape if you don’t want the pages to get paint on them. Use the binder clips to stand book on edge and spray with oil rubbed bronze spray paint.
When dry, use the metallic paint to highlight elements & creases in the paper. Practice first to learn the technique. It’s not hard, but it takes a little finessing to not get to much on.

Make Your Wand
Raw Materials:
- A stick at least 12” to 21” or so. I used a small diameter bamboo stick about 3/8” in diameter. You could also use chopsticks or dowel sticks
- Beaded metal chain—I had a really long piece but smaller sections could be used. Cut off the connector piece with wire cutters
- Pull from ceiling fan
Purchased or from personal craft stash
- Oil rubbed bronze spray paint
- Tacky glue
- Hot glue gun/sticks
Pour a good size puddle of tacky glue into a small container, drop the beaded chain into the glue, coating it really well. Starting at one end, spiral the chain onto the stick. I used a small binder clip to keep the end in place. Let dry. If the ends have come unglued, reattach with hot glue. Next, I sqiggled glue round and round haphazardly about 4” or so beyond the bead chain. The ceiling fan pull has a hole in it. Add hot glue (watch your fingers) & push the stick into the pull. Once dry, spray the entire wand with the oil rubbed bronze. I stuck the point end of the stick in styrofoam to spray paint it. Once it was dry, I sprayed the other end.
