Handles for Adaptable System on Prone Adaptive Surfboard

handles black and white.png

This Jabali 5'4" wooden surfboard has been retrofitted with US fin boxes on the deck, allowing prone adaptive surfers to add and personalize various attachments. This setup makes it easier to test and use different attachment configurations.

These handles are the first of three attachments I designed for this system, with a focus on reusing materials and creating an accessible design that is easily replicable and adaptable to the surfer’s needs.

You can find the other attachments and components on my profile.

This project was part of research on adaptive surfing conducted at the University of Ghent for my Master’s thesis. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at charlie.debreuck@gmail.com.

Supplies

  1. Discarded climbing rope
  2. Sewing machine with zigzag stitch function
  3. Surfboard with an adaptable US fin box system (see related Instructable on my profile)

Determine the Desired Handle Length

Measure the distance between your chosen attachment point on the board to determine the length of the handle.

Cut the Rope

Cut two pieces of rope, each twice the measured length. This will give you a suitable handle size while accounting for the rope's elasticity.

Remove the Core

Remove the inner core of the rope by simply pulling it out.

Then, melt the edges of the outer sheath with a lighter or heat source to prevent the strands from fraying.

Make a Loop

Form a closed loop by stitching the two ends of the rope sheath together. This can be done either by hand or with a sewing machine.

Close the Loop to Form the Handlestrap

To create the handle shape, fold the rope loop so the sides touch. Sew them together using a zigzag stitch. Start with a zero-length stitch to create a strong anchor point.

Make sure to leave a small gap at the end of the fold this opening will allow bolts to be inserted later for attachment to the board.

Attache the Handle to the Board

Insert a sliding nut into the fin box rail. Then, secure the handle by fastening it with a bolt and washer into the nut.

You can choose from various handle sizes and placement positions, depending on the surfer’s specific needs and preferences.
