I’ve sewn together a backpack with a hand attached to the back for a more on the go need. For example, let's say your math class ends and you have just one last question on your homework, so you don’t want to pack up your calculator but all your other hands are full. Now instead of needing to do the dreadful task of putting up your calculator just to get it back out now you can have the backpack hand hold it for you.

The Pockets
.jpg)
- Note - All stitches made are backstitches and all stitches will be made 1 cm away from the edge of the material
- Take a 17 cm by 22 cm Cotton canvas piece and place it along the top edge of a 17 cm by 18 cm of Quilting Cotton, Make sure whatever pattern you have on the Quilting cotton is placed facing the Cotton canvas
- Stitch the short side that fully aligned on the Cotton canvas
- Now flip the Cotton canvas over and align the unsewn end of the quilting cotton to the unsewn short edge of the Cotton Canvas, flatten the 2 pieces use pins if necessary
- There is going to be a small piece of Cotton canvas where it doubles up and there is no Quilting fabric sew along that edge to keep the canvas together and right along the edge where the canvas is almost at the quilting fabric
- Repeat this process once
- Side Pocket
- Take one pocket piece and place the bottom of the edge that has the quilting cotton attached to it and place it facing a 17 cm by 39 cm Cotton Canvas, place small edge to small edge.
- Sew along all edges that are touching the large canvas except the one that is facing upward, so you will have a small opening for the pocket
- Repeat this once
The Flap
- Take the 22 cm by 24 cm fold it in half and cut out 2 long ways corners to make a curved shape
- Overlay the cut piece over the other 22 cm by 24 cm and cut to make the shapes the same
- Fold one piece in half long ways and mesure from the crease 2.5 cm away from the edge
- Place a magnetic button back and mark the slits in the button back
- Cut at the marked location
- Place a magnetic button front through the slits and attach the button back at the back and fold down the front prongs to hold the button front in place
- Now overlay the piece on top of eachother with the button back on the outside
- Sew along the edge except for along the straight edge
- Cut small triangles along the curved edges of the flap
- Flip the flap inside out
- Sew along the outside edge except the long edge
Back of the Backpack
.jpg)
- Take a 30 cm by 36 cm cotton canvas piece and fold it in half
- Using the midpoint open it up and mark a spot 4 cm from the top 30 cm edge
- Measure 5 cm from the mark you just made on both sides
- Take a 22 cm piece of wide webbing strap and pin one end of the strap to one mark and the other end to the other mark
- Cut 5 cm of wide webbing strap and wrap it in a plastic ladder slider
- Measure 2 cm from the bottom of the bag on one side, place the button of the wide webbing strap along this mark
- Repeat for the otherside of the backpack
- Take 200 cm of wide webbing strap and place it end to end, cut the strap in half
- Place one strap next to the outside of the strap on the backpack, do the same for the other half of the strap on the other side
- Sew along the straps end touching the fabric
- Do the same for the parts at the bottom with the strap double backing over itself to hold the strap down
- Weave one of the long straps through the plastic sliders
- Fold the strap over twice or three times and sew the strap to keep it in place, do this for both sides
- Place the long side of the flap along the top of the strap with the magnetic button facing outwards sew the top of the flap to the large canvas piece
- Fold the flap back and sew the bottom of the flap to the backpack

- Next take a 30 cm by 23 cm canvas and line the long edge up with the 30 cm by 36 cm short edge, pin it in place
- Next take the back of the backpack you made in step 4 and line the bottom edge of that with the other short edge of the 30 cm by 23 cm
- Sew along the edges where the parts are layed on top of each other
- Next take each pocket and place it where the bottom edges are lined up with the short sides of the 30 cm by 23 cm, make sure to have the pocket side facing inwards
- Sew the 2 pockets to the 30 cm by 23 cm
- Next line both pockets up with their respective sides front and back edges, pin them in place and sew
- Next flip the bag inside out
- Take the 2, 45 cm by 46.5 cm quilting cotton and overlay them. Stitch the 2 long sides together and along one of the short sides stitch 10 cm towards the center on both sides to leave a small gap for later, if you have a pattern on one side have that facing inwards
- Put the bag inside of the quilting cotton, make sure the flap is down and out of the way of the top edge
- Line the quilting cotton up with the top rim of the backpack if there is more area for the quilting cotton just group it up in some place to account for the issue, pin it to the rim. Sew along the edge.
- Pull the bag through the hole in the bottom and push the quilting cotton into the bag
- Next you can place 6 grommet eyelets 2 on the front, 2 on the back, and 1 on each pocket side at the top of the bag just below the handle level. Leave about 9 cm of space between each grommet on the front and back
- For the front of the backpack run yarn through a grommet then go to the closest side pocket and run it out of the backpack repeat going in and then out of the backpack until every grommet has yarn going through it, pull at least 10 in of yarn though the last hole making sure its coming out instead of in and cut the yarn that entered the first grommet at around the same length
- Run the yarn ends though a cord lock, tie them so they can’t come loose
- Take the flap of the backpack and lay it at the front, mark where the magnetic button falls
- Cut out slits for the magnetic button as you did before, and using the hole in the quilting cotton place a button back where the slits were made, and then use those slits to place a button front (make sure this front is compatible with the other magnet button you used don’t use one that goes out when the other button also goes outward) and close the prongs around the button back
- Now sew the hole in the quilting cotton closed
- Place your backpack to the side for now

- 3D print 3 Hirth Joints
- Place the springs inside of the hirth joints going all the way through both pieces, the more through the other side the better
- Hot glue the screw to the knob, then hot glue the spring around the screw
- 3D print 3 “fingers”
- You can slide these into the large square holes protruding from the Hirth joints
- Slide fingers into one half of the hirth joint if necessary use hot glue to keep it n place but the “finger” should be pretty stable
- Hot glue the 3 ft. of flexible plastic tubing to the 3.8 in Styrofoam ball
- Mark the other side of the Styrofoam ball and measure 1 in out in 3 directions from that point on the ball and mark this location this is where the fingers will go, that point is where the front of the finger will go
- Next sketch out the square into the Styrofoam ball and begin to dig slightly in that shape just to lower the overall height of the finger do this for about 1 cm or 2
- Hot Glue the finger hirth joint combinations into those spots make sure to have the sphere of the finger facing towards the midpoint
Put It All Together
.jpg)
- Using the front of the backpack mark 5 in to the middle and 3 in up, mark this spot
- Place one end of the flexible tubing on that mark, circle it, and then carefully cut the circle out make sure not to cut out the inner lining
- String the tubing through the hole, and you're done. Great job.
