*Hand Carved* Sliding Whistle

Hand carving a sliding whistle is an ultimate achievement among explorers and can take some practice, but with the help of this lesson you will be well on your way.

all you will need:

• Pocket knife
• straight piece of wood about an inch thick
• drill
• drill bits
• dowel
• vice

First you will need to find a straight dead branch and cut around 4 inches off. Then you should drill a hole about the same diameter as a pencil all the way through.

Carve the bark off the mouth area at one end and using a saw cut a notch going halfway through the stick about an inch from the mouthpiece. Finally cut a diagonal slot as seen above to form the whistle.

Like a trombone this slider will allow you to change the pitch of the whistle allowing you to play more than one note.

Firstly cut a slice off the back of the whistle. Then glue it to a short piece of dowel slightly smaller than the hole. Finally slide the other end into the hole of the whistle.

Your very first sliding whistle. Now you can experiment with more elaborate designs based of the fundamental skills you have learnt today!
