You’ll need to create a template of your design out of paper. Print and cut out your design in the size you want your piñata to be. You’ll probably have to print your design on multiple sheets of paper and then tape them together.

Step 2

Trace your stencil onto found cardboard using a Sharpie or pen. This needs to be done for the front and back of the piñata.

Step 3

Cut out your design with scissors and use your X-ACTO knife to cut out the insides of letters like b.

Step 4

Figure out the depth of the piñata (we went with 3 inches) and begin cutting strips of cardboard, which will bridge the front and back of your design. Once the pieces are cut, use your glue gun to put together the connecting pieces.

Step 5

Before sealing the front and back together, fill the inside with candy.

Step 6

Using your glue gun, attach the top of the design to the connecting pieces. Make sure there are no gaps where candy can fall out.

Step 7

Take a black garbage bag and fold it into equal parts. Create the fringe strips but cutting into the garbage bags halfway. Cut along the creases and you will have several strips to work with. We used two garbage bags to cover our piñata. You can also use black tissue paper if you prefer.

Step 8

Starting at the bottom of the piñata, use your glue gun or a glue stick to attach the first layer of the garbage bag. Continue to add layers, overlapping slightly, until the piñata is covered.

And you’re done. Hang it up and your piñata is ready to be destroyed. Happy Halloween!
