Jan is a blind man who has limitations while performing daily activities. His biggest need is cooking independently. He has an induction stove, but he can't operate the buttons because he can’t see or feel them.

He wants to use his induction stove without having to place a new one. There are special induction stoves made for blind people, but they are expensive. It’s over 1000 euros for that specific induction stove.

so we made a cover for a cooking plate so it becomes easier for blind people to cook. it helps them finding the places where to put the pots, pans and buttons. It also indicates the power of the cookers with a higher or lower tone.

Concept

the concept is a plate can put over you're already existing induction plate. it is intended for people who are blind. the plate has recesses that ensure that the blind can feel where the cooking pot or pan should be placed. There is also a recess for the buttons so that that person can find them more easily

Coding

for the coding we used the microft Makecode for microbit. we used 3 pins. 1 grn en 2 diffrent pins that goes to a doorbell. when you push the doorbell the counter of the cooker goes up or down depending on the button you push. when you push the button you hear a tune that indicates the cooking fire position

Prototyping

for the prototype part we used cardboard that we cut with the lasercutter. Then we made a recess to hide the electronics in the hob cover. We putted the buttons on a little. pillow to recreate the feeling of pressing it down.

End Result

the end result is a plate that you place on your own hob with recesses that ensure that your pot or pan is perfectly in place also the buttons are replaced by physical buttons that the blind person can feel and thus easier to use
