Gym Design Challenge
My name is Luke. I'm a senior in high school. My inspiration for this project was based off of what James explained he was looking for. One thing that I really wanted to add to my project was a pool, knowing that one direction that James wanted this to go was a rehabilitation center.
Understand the Problem
A key step to starting this project is looking at the ideas and the things that the host of the project thought of and a good way to start that was looking at what he has published.
- One of the locations where I found some information on the rules, requirements and what is important to the host was on his website. I read through it and saw what he wanted. In his website he explained his vision for a gym that would suit people that would go there to workout, exercise, and recover from injuries.
- Another place I found good information and ideas about the project was on Youtube where he posted about the project and explained more about what he wants and what's most important to him.
Research
To start the research part of my project I used what I learned about the project in the last step and brainstormed some question that I might need to know to look into modelling a gym. Some questions I looked into were:
- Where is this going to be? What are realistic dimensions for this gym? I looked on zillow and found some places for sale that would give me a nice place and some dimensions to work with
- What would I need to have a pool in the gym? As James discussed he wanted this to also be a place for recovery and a pool might be a good addition for that.
- Most of my other questions were about the dimensions of certain workout machines that would be in the gym.
- What can be done to help prevent COVID in the gym?
Brainstorm and Develop a Solution
In my first design of the gym it was pretty simple. I would have cardio equipment on the first floor with the locker rooms and on the second floor I would have all the benches, weights, and racks. In the final design I decided to add the pool on the first floor going all around the cardio equipment and a little section of the pool go in between the locker rooms where people can train with trainers. On the second floor the change I made was adding rooms in the front of the building where people can go in and train with the trainers.
Create a Model
In this process I started by making an elevated first floor so that I could put in a pool that would go all the way around the cardio part of the gym. I made the pool like this so that the pool could have a current and it would help people swim around. for those people who were looking to train with a trainer in a part of the pool that didn't have a current I had that for them in between the two locker rooms.
The locker rooms were placed in the back so that I could also put stairs leading up to the second floor and not waste space. on the locker room walls will have the water fountains and sanitation stations to help with sanitation.
I had the treadmills facing into each other because I thought it would be weird to have them facing out looking at the people swimming.
On the second floor we will have the weights, racks, and benches where people will be able to lift. also to help with sanitation and safety we have a bunch of rigs where people will be able to have their own space to do bench, squat, deadlift or any workouts where they can pick their dumbbells and bring it back to their space.
Also on the second floor there is four rooms where people can use them to meet with trainers for recovery.
Iterations
The first think I changed during the design of the model was the amount of treadmills I can have, the amount of space I had was very limited and with the dimensions I found for the treadmills I had to cut a few treadmills to also make sure everyone was also at a safe distance.
