Guest Wifi Dock

IMG_5592.jpg

How to make a guest wifi station for new guests without revealing wifi passwords. This can also be useful if you don't always remember your wifi password and don't want to type it in for someone or don't want to check that posted note on the computer.

Supplies

NFC tag or card

iPhone/Andriod device

Sticker paper or paper for QR Code

Tinkercad

3D Printer

Double-sided tape for mounting or hanger pins for canvas'

Clear tape

Create and 3D Print the Dock

First determine the size of your NFC tag/card I made this design which you can copy and remix for correctly fitting your card: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/c9JFJntWOdX. Then import the finished 3D file into Cura or your preferred 3D slicer I would recommend 20% infill as it takes a while to print otherwise. Then export, and upload to your 3D printer and start printing!

(If this is your first time 3D Printing I would recommend this guide to read first: https://www.bcn3d.com/the-beginners-guide-to-3d-pr...)

Write to NFC Tag

Once you have finished 3D printing the dock, insert NFC tag/NFC card into the slot for it. If it doesn't fit perfectly the first time, no worries! If it's too small for the card, I recommend using a Dremel (Please use caution and ask parents before using it) or reprint it with the corrected measurements. It took me about three times before I could make a perfect fit for the card I had.

Once you have inserted the NFC card (or tag), download the "NFC Tools" either on App Store or the Play Store. Once downloaded the app. Open it, tap "Write" > "Add a record" > then scroll down and tap "Wifi" and enter your wifi credentials of the wifi network you want your guests to connect to. (Tip: if you don't know your wifi password/name? Look underneath the router; most routers have it shown there.) Then tap Save and click the "Write" button, follow the onscreen instructions, and bring the phone near the NFC tag to write onto it.

Create QR Code for Wifi

Go to https://www.qr-code-generator.com/solutions/wifi-q... and enter your credentials for your wifi which you want your guests to connect. Once completed, download the QR code image and print it on either plain paper or sticker paper. If you're using plain paper, cut out the QR code and use tape to attach to the front of the NFC card, or if you are using sticker paper, cut out the QR code and stick it on the front of the NFC card.

(Note: We are creating both NFC card wifi and QR code wifi because currently, apple ios do not support NFC wifi without using third-party apps, but they do support QR code scanning. The NFC is for Andriod devices which support wifi NFC connectivity.)

Mount and Finish the Wifi Dock & How to Use

Almost finished! I used double-sided tape to mount the wall, but you can use whatever preferred method, like hangers for paintings or pins.

I also just drew over the text with a black sharpie to better see it, or if you want, you can always write the text instead of 3D printing it. And you're done!

How do I use it?

For an iPhone: Open the camera app and point it at the QR code, and a notification will pop up asking if you want to join the network.

For an Andriod: place android touching the NFC card or near it to connect or use the QR code.
