Having a journal in your Guest Room is an extra special touch that visitors will appreciate. I wanted to make one, and having purchased a few journal making books some years ago, I thought now would be a good opportunity to start learning how. This book is very basic, really no special materials are required. I just used what I had on hand to get the journal completed.
Supplies
- pretty paper, one side plain, other side printed
- glue stick, photo glue
- scissors, rotary cutter
- ruler, straight edge
- big needle, strong thread
- optional: templates, printer for quotes
Create Pages

I used 12 x 12 paper, cut in half, then folded in half
Used a variety of prints and patterns that looked nice with each other, and also matched the color scheme of the room.
I ended up with 20 pages, using too many can create bulk so that the book doesn't stay closed.
I found some interesting and funny quotes online. I printed them out on light brown paper, cut them out, and glued onto the page sides where there is a print, as you can't write on them.
Create Outer Cover

The outer cover should be slightly larger and stiffer than the pages.
I glued two halves back to back, then added a little border.
I used some quilt templates to create a flower, similar to what I have on the curtains in the guest room.
I would press my work between books to keep everything flat during the glue drying.
Sewing the Binding

Typically, the pages are sewn together, then the cover is glued on later to hide the binding. Since I wanted to keep this simple, I sewed everything as one unit.
Using an awl, or simply the needle you'll be using, poke 3 holes equidistant from each other, through all thicknesses. Be sure all papers and cover are lined up nicely.
Using needle and about 18" of upholstery/heavy-duty thread, feed through holes according to diagram.
Tighten everything up nicely, and knot on out side. Create a loop/knot/tassel combo if you'd like.

If you have a writing desk, or just a nightstand, be sure to display your book with an attractive pen, to encourage your guests to share their thoughts and experiences.
