Growing Gerberas Daisys on a Balcony (Cheaply)

Gerbera Daisys are excellent value for money. They are inexpensive yet provide bright, cheerful, long lasting cut flowers (10 - 14 days).

Last year, I brought 3 plants and planted them in my small garden. I was impressed how they continued to flower for about 3 months and provided many a vibrant cut flower.

This year I thought I would just grow them in the pots they came in and hang them off my balcony railing. This is a cheap way to have access to cut flowers as the pot plants only cost $9 each.

Supplies

  • Gerbera Daisy pot plants
  • Drill
  • Cord

  • Drill a pilot hole near the rim of the plastic pot plant.
  • Enlarge the hole with a bigger drill bit.

Attaching to Balcony Railing (Pt 2)

  • Insert a cord into the hole and attach to a balcony railing with a knot.
  • Melt the ends of the cord to stop them fraying with a lighter if required.
  • Probably a good idea to have the pot plant hanging on the inside of the balcony rather the outside as residents on the lowest level can get a bit 'uppity'.

  • Water once a week. - Don't let them dry out.
  • Cut the blooms when they form and display in a vase.

These flowers make good cut flowers - lasting over 10 days in a vase. The plants keep growing flowers over time - so far the 3 pot plants have produced 16 cut flowers over 3 weeks with more on the way.
