Grow Your Duckling With Makey Makey

IMG_5009.jpg

Introduction

Watch your duck hatch from it’s egg and grow into a duckling! Interact with your duckling by clicking some activities for your duck such as feeding your duck, swimming, or sleeping. This project is mostly for entertainment and is also intended to inspire spin-offs that viewers can make with their own versions of the project and their own creative inputs.

Supplies

  • Box
  • Paper
  • Paper Clips
  • Yarn
  • Fabric
  • Clay
  • Plant stalks
  • Egg shells
  • Any small object resembling duck
  • Glue/Tape
  • Scratch Project

Step I: Completing the Code in Scratch

  1. Make a Scratch account
  2. Press the create button on the Scratch website to begin creating a new project
  3. Name/Title your project, remember to include "Makey Makey" in the title
  4. To sync up code with the Makey Makey, press the add extension button at the bottom of the Code column
  5. Add the Makey Makey extension
  6. Begin making your custom sprites, if making pixel art, this is a good beginner website
  7. Use the preferred “keys” (left, right, up, down, and space are used for this project) for each sprite
  8. These “keys” will activate when the Makey Makey is connected to that key and connects to an object
  9. Make custom sounds for the sprite, this is a good beginner website
  10. This is an animation based project so each individual “scene” has to be made
  11. Add in two or more options at the end for activities for the duck
  12. Please remember to save every so often so progress will not be lost

Step II: Making the Creations

IMG_5010.jpg
  1. All the smaller items are composed in a box
  2. Gather 4 egg shells and clean the insides thoroughly
  3. Bend paperclip straight and bend the tip into a loop
  4. Make the clay peas (for the feeding activity)
  5. Make the clay placement mats which will also serve as activity choices (in this project, blue for beach activity, and green for restart code)
  6. To make the placements, take different colored clay and roll into flat spiral
  7. Plant stems could be added to the "reset" mat for detail
  8. Insert the bent paper clips into the sides of the mats
  9. Make the yarn ball for hatching the duck
  10. A simple method of making the ball is to wrap yarn around your hand 30-40 times and tie a string in the center. Once done, cut the loops of the yarn and arrange to ideal shape
  11. For the extra eggs which can be an alternate to the mats, add blue paper cut into tiny pieces to mimic water for the beach activity and grass in the other for resetting the code
  12. Add the duck item and place a wire around or near the item, this will serve as the sleep activity (in my project a nightcap was fashioned out of some leftover fabric and string, this is optional)

Step III: Attaching the Makey Makey to the Creations

  1. Plug wire into the motherboard of the Makey Makey, it should light up when done correctly
  2. Connect the large red wire to the computer
  3. Clip the one of the alligator clip to the Earth
  4. Clip alligator clips to the ends of the paper clips of the creations made in Step II
  5. When the objects are attached, clip the other ends of the alligator clips to each object's designated keys
  6. Hold the end of the alligator clip that is clipped to Earth and touching the first object should begin the Scratch code
