So, in this instructable I will show you how to Grow Money Plant in water from Cuttings that you can also follow in your home and grow a healthy plant easily.

Propagating a Money Plant

money-plant-progagation.jpg

It is pretty much easy to propagate the money plant from its cuttings. You can either get a healthy plant from a nursery or acquire the cuttings from a mature plant at home.

To propagate your money plant, get a healthy and thick stem, and cut a 4-6 inch section below the root node. Make a sharp cut of around 45 degrees, just above a node. A node is a point from which the plant leaves of the money plant start growing.

Requirements For Propagating

Growing a money plant in the water, you’ll need the following :

  1. A glass bottle, vase, or jar, ceramic pot
  2. Clean and freshwater / Tap water

Take a glass jar, preferably a transparent one, as you can easily check on the development of the roots in the new plant. But choosing a dark vase will help you reducing the growth of algae.

Fill the jar with water such that it covers at least one node. The water should be clean and free from chlorine. If the water contains chlorine, then let it sit for at least 12 hours to evaporate. After that, you can fill the jar with this water. your jar is now ready for the plantation of the plant into it.

Put the plant stem from the cut side down into the water and make sure that the lower end does not have any leaves on it and the nodes are soaking in water.

How to Take Care of Money Plant in Water ?

If you are wondering about how to maintain a money plant cutting in the water? Here are some tips for the care and maintenance of the plant.

  • Make sure to change the water in the jar at least once a week, as the roots require oxygen for proper growth, which the water loses with time.
  • Place your pot in a spot where it gets a lot of bright but indirect sunlight. The direct afternoon sun may adversely affect and may even damage the growth of your plant. You may keep it near windows or in balcony.
  • Regularly clean the vase or jar in which you are keeping your money plant to keep any algae at bay.
  • You need to have patience, as it will take a few weeks before it can start new root growth. Sometimes it may take upto 3-4 weeks before appearing new roots.
  • Exposure to temperatures less than 10°C may also damage the growth and foliage of the plant.
  • It is a optional but suggested to add the dilute liquid fertilizer of 1/4 strength to water. You can add this fertilizer to the water every 4-6 weeks.

I hope at this stage you already know and understand how money plant works, how to grow and maintain, so lets do it practically now.

For this I got a healthy steam form my old money plant tree. It consists a few leaves with nodes on it. So, now cut every leaf separately with its node as shown in pictures and prepare for planting.

Prepare the Vase

disposable-glass.jpg

For planting You may use any kind of vase or glass bottle, or jar, ceramic pots anything. Transparency will let you see the development.

In my case I choose to use some disposable glasses for the planting.

Prepare the Water

water-bowl.jpg
water-bowl2.jpg

As I already mentioned the you can use any freshwater or tape water and it should not contain any chlorine. So I kept my water for 12 hours to get evaporate any chemicals in it and hence my water is also ready for planting.

The Planting

We have all things we need, so just dip the cuttings now into the water with nodes down to the bottom and place the glasses near the window or any semi-shaded places where you can get a bright indirect sunlight and here you're done.

Maintaining

dispo-glasses.jpg
pothos-in-glass2.jpg
pothos-in-glass3.jpg

Now is the time for patience, you've already done more than half the work. Now you just need to maintain it timely for a proper growth.

Change the water on weekly basis, clean algae on glass surfaces. After a month you may notice few roots growth and new shoots coming out from the bottom.

Growth Over Time

pothos-grow-shoot6.jpg
pothos-grow-shoot7.jpg
pothos-grow-shoot9.jpg
pothos-grow-shoot-10.jpg

The first thing that you'll notice after a month is, a tiny shoots coming out from the bottom of the parent leaf. It will grow further and turn into a baby leaf.

Next more shoots will come out from the bottom of the baby leaf or you may get surprised with multiple baby leaves at once as one of my cutting has grown.

After this stage the leaves will start growing bigger and the parent leaf may get yellow or rotten. So, at one time all the parent leaves will die and only baby leaves will be there.

Now as all your cutting have grown new stems and new roots in it so, in couple of months you will see 2-4 more new leaves coming out from the cutting and the leaves are growing much bigger.

Hence it is the time you clean it off and move to the next step.

What to Do Next

So, your plants have grown old now and you need to shift them to a bigger size vase so that they gets fine growth and let other steam grow quickly. Also you can put a few stems in one big bowl, this way roots will grow much faster. Also you can use fertilizers, for promoting plant growth as growth will be slower in water.

But if you are using it for indoors or offices or in desktop you may not need that much growth at all, but also a healthier and bushy growth is always needed.

So, if you want to make your plants grow much faster and bushier, then you must follow the next step.

Alternate Way

The Alternate way__

Here I've shown the alternate path and it's growth over time vs growth in water.

Therefore, at this stage you can plant your grown cuttings in soil. Planting in soil will promote the growth much faster than water. Just take any plant pottery and garden soil or coco-peat as a substrate and plant it.

Remember to save your plants from insects, as they will eat the baby leaves and the plant may die overtime as happened to some of my plants.

So, if you care a little bit, in few weeks you can see a vast growth in your plants and within few month it will fairly grow much healthy and bushier. Also a little trimming and pruning is better.

Result

bushy-money-plant.jpg

Here you can see both my water and soil plant growths. So now its your choice what you want to do next and how you want to keep your plant.

Personally I like both the ways for different purposes as both has their advantages and disadvantages.

So, I would request you to kindly share your opinion and results below, so that all the community members including me can get benefit from the results and experiment and new ways to propagate and grow money plant at home.

Thank You!
