This a recipe for my Great Grandma Paquette's Fudge Cake Icing. It is a recipe that has been handed down to my grandmother and then to my mother.

It is a chocolate fudge icing that can be used to coat any chocolate cake. It adds a rich layer of chocolate fudge to compliment your cake.

Supplies

  • Chocolate cake of your choice
  • Stove
  • Pot
  • Mixing spoon
  • Sink
  • Frosting Spatula

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon imitation vanilla

Prepare a Chocolate Cake

This Icing is designed to be poured directly onto the cake when it is ready so it is important to have your cake ready before you start making the icing.

Any cake recipe will work but this recipe was made to cover a 9x13 inch cake.

Fill a Sink With Cold Water

Bring to a Boil

Bring the entire mix to a boil, THEN set a timer for 5 minutes.

Grandma says that the difference between a good and bad batch is how long you boil it for. 5 minutes is perfect. Do not boil for too long or too short.

Remove Heat Add Vanilla

After 5 minutes of boiling, remove the pot from the heat source and then mix in the vanilla.

Place in Cold Water and Stir

Dip the whole pot into your cold water and start stirring slowly. Be careful not to let any water spill over the top and into the icing. You should notice the icing become smoother. Mix for about 2 minutes until you feel the icing start to thicken.

Pour and Spread Over Cake

Once the icing starts to thicken, pour it slowly over the top of the cake and spread it evenly.

Cool

Now, just let it cool and the icing will begin to harden.
