*Gourmet* Disneyland Churro Bites
Being locked in your house is the perfect time to make this delicious copycat recipe of Disneyland's famous Churro Bites, but we're going to make it gourmet!
This simple recipe builds on Disneyland's recipe and uses only basic pantry ingredients.
These churros will be crisp on the outside, but soft and custard-y on the inside.
Supplies
Makes 2 servings-
- Water- 1/3 cup (80 ml)
- Flour- 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp (80 g)
- Butter- 2 tbsp (30 g)
- Egg- 1 medium sized
- Sugar- 1 tbsp
- Salt- pinch
- Cinnamon powder- pinch
- Vanilla essence- 1/4 tsp
For the sugar coating-
- Sugar (brown or white)- 1/2 cup (100 g)
- Cinnamon powder- 1/4 tsp
Special Equipment-
- Piping Bag
- Star shaped nozzle
Brown the Butter
This is our trick to making these gourmet churros. Browning the butter adds a pleasant nutty flavour to them.
To brown the butter heat 1 tbsp of the butter over a medium flame while occasionally stirring it till it starts foaming and turns brown. Remove from heat, let this slightly cool down and then add the remaining 1 tbsp remaining butter in small pieces while gently stirring and let it cool down completely.
Preparing the Dough
Once the butter has cooled, to the saucepan add the water, salt, sugar, cinnamon powder, stir well and bring it to a rolling boil.
Once it has boiled, reduce the heat to low and add the flour while continuously stirring.
After 3-5 minutes of stirring, it should become a ball and not stick to the sides of the saucepan anymore. Cook for 2-3 minutes, then remove from heat and keep it aside.
Finish the Dough and Load the Piping Bag
After the mixture has been kept aside for 15 minutes and cooled completely, add the egg and vanilla essence to the mixture and combine really well (4-5 minutes of stirring).
Next, load the dough into the piping bag, attach the nozzle and we're ready for frying!
Frying the Churros!
In a saucepan/ skillet/ dutch oven/ pot, heat any neutral vegetable oil on a medium-low flame.
Gently pipe out 1.5-2 inch segments of the dough from the piping bag, cut with a knife or scissors, and directly drop into the hot oil. Fry them in small batches (1-2 minutes on each side, then flip) till they're light-golden brown and then drain onto paper napkins to soak excess oil.
Final Touches!
While they're still hot, prepare a mixture of 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder in a bowl, and drop these hot churros into this bowl. Gently toss them till they get coated on all sides.
Serve either plain or with chocolate sauce and enjoy!
