Got a Copy of "Creepy Cute" by Christen Haden? Make Link From Zelda!
If you've got a copy of "Creepy Cute" by Christen Haden, you don't need me to tell you that it's a great book full of lots of uber-cute patterns that also serve as great templates for other critters!
I took the basic head and body patterns in addition to the ears from "Nosferatu" and changed them up to make Link from the Legend of Zelda. With some yarn and patience, you'll be able to make a lil' hero who's ready to save the land of Hyrule (oh yeah, and to save that pesky princess too)!
**NOTE** I actually goofed on my lil' Link in the pictures! Depending on how much you want to stay true to the game, Link has historically been left-handed (except in Skyward Sword, where he suddenly became a righty), and therefore my sword is actually on the wrong side! If you want to make a SUPER authentic Link, just reverse the positioning of Link's sword when you make your own. :)
Materials:
Yarn colors: green, white, beige
Felt colors: yellow, brown, blue, grey
Embroidery floss colors: green for sewing on Link's hat, red and yellow for sword & shield details
Size E hook, 6 mm plastic safety eyes, fabric glue, polyfil, polypellets
Following the patterns found in Creepy Cute:
Head: Follow directions for "basic head" and ears from "Nosferatu" in beige yarn as instructed. Position safety eyes between rows 8 and 9, approximately 4-5 stitches apart. Do not attach ears until you've attached Link's hat and hair
Body: Follow directions for "basic body." Starting with white yarn, follow the instructions as written for rows 1-6. Then switch to green yarn for the remainder of the body.
Body detail: Using green yarn: Yarn over the hook, then at the seam between the white and green yarn, insert your hook into the fabric and slide the hook under one stitch and out the other side, then slip stitch. Repeat all the way around until you form a band of slip stitches at the seam between the white and green yarn. (This process is a little tricky to explain in writing, so here's the video that taught me how to do this! http://nerdigurumi.com/2010/02/slip-stitch-technique-for-detail-work.html).
Using the chain of slip stitches formed at the belt, SC all the around for 2 more rows in green yarn to form the lower hem of Link's tunic. This will give it a little more dimension, instead of having his tunic crocheted flat with the rest of the body. Alternatively, you could skip this part and switch to green yarn at row 5 when making the body, but I feel like having it fan out a bit looks a little nicer. :)
Stuff head and body, but don't attach them together yet.

Using green yarn:
Row 1: SC 3 into a magic ring
Row 2: SC 3 around
Row 3: [inc] x3 (6 stitches)
Row 4: [inc 1, sc] x3 (9 stitches)
Rows 5-7: SC 9 around
Row 8: [inc 1, sc 2] x3 (12 stitches)
Rows 9-11: SC 12 around
Row 12: [inc 1, sc 3] x3 (15 stitches)
Row 13: [inc 1, sc 4] x3 (18 stitches)
Row 14: [inc 1, sc 5] x3 (21 stitches)
Row 15: [inc 1, sc 6] x3 (24 stitches)
Row 16: [inc 1, sc 7] x3 (27 stitches)
Row 17: [inc 1, sc 8] x3 (30 stitches)
Fasten off and weave in ends
Hair: Using yellow felt, cut a piece approximately 2 1/4" x 1 1/4" (the length will vary depending on how your head turns out...cut out however much you think you'll need to give him a nice set of bangs). Using this piece of felt, cut a nice side-swept fringe for Link's hair (think Justin Bieber!), but don't cut all the way to the top, leaving about 1/2 inch from the top to where you cut the hair (see diagram). Cut out two more small oblong triangles to make his sideburns.
Position Link's fringe onto his head, and using pins, position the front of his hat over the fringe, so that his bangs hang out just under the hem of the hat, and position the back of his hat so that it comes down to the nape of his neck. Using green embroidery thread and a sharp needle, sew Link's hat and hair onto his head by following the stitches all the way around the edge of his hat (a sharp needle is needed to be able to pierce through the layers of yarn and felt when you get to sewing on his hair). After sewing on his hat/hair, position the ears that you made earlier and sew onto each side of his head, with the points of his ears positioned over hatline. Then take your two sideburns and use fabric glue to glue them in front of each ear.
Attach the head to the body. Your little hero's already coming into formation! Now he needs some hero accessories...
Sword:
Cut a piece from the tip of a disposable chopstick 2.5" long. Using grey felt, cut two pieces of a "blade" to cover the chopstick, but leave about 1/2 of the top of the chopstick exposed for the handle of the sword. Before sewing the "blade" onto the chopstick, apply some glue to the two pieces before placing them over the chopstick, then sew along the sides and around the tip of the blade. Wrap a small piece of blue felt around the handle area and glue it down. Use some yellow embroidery thread to wrap around the hilt in a criss-cross design. This will give the handle an nice decorative effect, and it will also hold the felt down better as well. Tie off the yellow thread, and hide the tails in the blade of the sword. Using blue felt, cut out two identical pieces to form the crossguard of Link's sword. Make sure the pieces are wide enough to cover where the blade starts and the handle stops to make the sword look neater overall (also to hide the knot you tied for the decorative yellow yarn, if it's showing!). I added a tiny little yellow diamond in the middle of the crossguard, but you can decorate the sword however you like! :)
Clothing accesories:
Using brown felt, cut out a belt for Link and glue or sew it around his waist. Cut out a small hollow square out of yellow felt to make Link's belt buckle and glue to the middle of Link's belt. Cut out another thin strip of felt to make the crossbody strap for his sword's sheath. Make sure it's long enough to wrap all the way around to the back! Using the finished sword as a guide, cut out a sheath for Link's sword, and embroider details in yellow thread to your liking. Sew (or glue) Link's sheath to his back, following the slant of the strap. Be careful to only sew/glue down only the bottom layer of his sheath so that you don't accidentally sew or glue it shut!
Shield:
Using felt, cut out a shield. I used a piece of blue felt as a "base", then cut out a grey border to glue over it. Embroider details as you like. I modeled my shield from Link's Hylian shield in Ocarina of Time. Glue (or sew) Link's shield to Link's right side (your left when you're facing Link).
Your little hero is now fully armed and ready to save the world. ONWARD!
