Gooooulish Ingredients
- 1 large onion
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk, or as needed
- 3/4 cup dry bread crumbs
- 1 quart oil for frying, or as needed
'Slash' the Rings
1. Heat the oil to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
2. Separate the onion slices into rings, about 1/4 inch thick or as desired, and set aside.
2. Separate the onion slices into rings, about 1/4 inch thick or as desired, and set aside.
Prepare 'Ghostly' Coating
In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
Make Your Rings 'ghost-white'
Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside.
Prepare the 'Ectoplasm'
Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork.
'Slime' the Rings
Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat.
The Rack
Place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier cleanup. Don't let them drip too long, or the breadcrumbs won't stick. If you haven't removed the clear, thin skin from the layers of the rings this will be especially important. You know this is the case if the batter beads up on the rings, and they look 'waterproof'.
No Cute Halloween Name for This Step
Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well - if it doesn't then the rings dripped TOO dry. Repeat with remaining rings.
Fried Alive!!!
Test the hotness of the oil by sprinkling a mid-sized batter/breadcrumb goober into the oil and see if it begins to fry nicely. When ready, deep fry the rings a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. You can do about 10 rings at a time, depending on the size of your 'cauldron'.
