Glug Glug Water Jug

The glug glug jug dates from the 1870 when pouring the jug makes sound, it has two chambers. one contains air the other is where the sounds comes out of.

Enjoying and drawn to things that are different; I saw this Jug that makes sound. I thought it would be fun to use for watering the inside house plants. I had to make one. I am not one to do clay or ceramic projects - I had to give it some thought on how to make one.

I came up with using bended PVC pipe.

The trick is to get two chambers in the jug for the water and air to mix while pouring. I am not to sure the word trick is correct, because I did a lot of trial and error to get it to work.

In this project, I could only find thick wall PVC which was a challenge to use with the heated sand technic to bend the pipe.

Well, with my family moto of ALWAYS TRY, my glug glug water jug worked.

Please remember to use eyes / ears and mouth protection

I used soapy water for filing and sanding PVC to reduce dust - caution is always on my mind.

• PVC pipe
• 2 inch diameter - 18 inches long
• 2 inch cap
• 3/4 inch diameter -11 inches long and 3 inches long
• Blue tape
• Sand Play sand - sifted - enough to fill the 2 inch pvc pipe
• Paint makers - assorted colors
• Tea container plastic - used for funnel

• Heat gun
• hand saw - I used a back saw with coarse teeth
• Funnel
• Hammer
• PVC cam pipe cutter
• Metal trays - cookie and small bread tray
• protective gloves for heat- leather
• File - medium tooth
• 240 wet dry paper
• soap water sprayer
• C clamps 3X
• metal pipe - I used 13/16 inch OD
• Pool que ball 2 1/4 inch diameter
• Bocce Ball 4 1/4 inch diameter
• Bucket
• plastic tarp
• sifters 1/4 inch hole and window screen holes
• tape measure and ruler
• Micrometers
• craft knife
• temperature gauge
• Grease pencil
• wood spatula to stir sand

I used hand saw to cut 2 inch pipe

• used a file to soften edges on each end
• used soapy water to sand ends
• used soapy water to remove manufactures labeling
• Using the grease pencil I marked the middle of the pipe

3/4 inch diameter breather pipe -11 inches long and optional 3 inches breather pipe

I used pipe cutter to 3/4 inch pipe

Make Funnel

I used a plastic sweet tea bottle

I used my saw blade from my multitool and scissors to cut the bottom off of the bottle

Sand Drying and Sifting to Size

• emptied 1/2 a bag of play sand on blue tarp in the driveway.
• Let dry in the sun until dry to the touch
• I gather up the tarp to isolate the sand in the middle - making it easier to transfer to bucker
• Using the funnel with the cap on as a scoop I filled the bucket

Sifting to size

• I put the 1/4 inch screen on top of small screen
• scooped sand into screens and sifted
• catching fine sand in square container
• 
  

Set up sand in pipe to bend

Using the sifted sand - supposedly the fine sand is better to transfer the heat inside the pipe

I put the cap on the bottom of the pipe

Using the funnel loaded the sand in the pipe almost to the top.

It is said that the sand needs some room to move when bending.

in doing this again - I will fill it to the top

I dumped the sand in to a small bread pan to have my preload for bending.

To start the pre heating of the sand

set the preload sand outside to heat ( it was 100 degrees F. outside)

I also put the 2 inch pipe

I PUT ON MY GLOVES

Switching heating between the sand and the pipe

I measured the sand from the outside and it was at 100 degrees

I used the heat gun on the inside and outside of the pipe to heat up

I switched to the pan of sand to heat up

Capped the the pipe on the bottom and filled with sand then capped the other end.

I laid the PVC pipe over the metal pipe (which was C clamped on the table with a portion was off the table to accept the PVC) I reference the grease pencil mark in the middle.

I kept the heat gun on the outside of the pipe until it started to droop.

used both hands to pull the pipe into a U shape.

Pulled both caps off and I emptied the sand.

I used my hammer to force the 3/4 breather pipe in one end until I could see it on the other end - just the tip

Holding the pvc pipe in the U position I let cool - to the point it would not move apart.

went outside and used the water hose to cool it completely

Cutting down the capped end and adding bell to sound end

Cut using back saw approximately 3 inches

You will also be cutting thru the 3/4 inch breather pipe

reheat the sound end (the longer end of U)

Push que ball to start the shaping of the bell

put more heat on the end

Push the larger bocce ball to widen the bell

Hold the bocce ball till cool - I put it under water to make sure it was set

I first did some experiments to see if it worked before decorating

I added the optional 3 inch pvc in the short cap end side

I decorated with paint pens

Added back the cap on the short end
