This really simple DIY project is the perfect gift and home decor idea for any music fan. These vinyl record trays are perfect to use for your next small meals, and they really easy to accomplish!

Materials List

For these project, you will need...

  • vinyl records
  • cork board tiles (or you can use cardboard scraps if your prefer)
  • glue (I used E6000, but you can also use a hot glue gun or spray adhesive)
  • marker
  • X-acto knife (not pictured)
  • spray varnish (not pictured)

Trace Out Your Record

First, take your vinyl records out of the album sleeves and set them aside. Now, lay out a cork board tile and trace the record on top with a marker. This will serve as a slip guard.

Cut Out the Circle

Now, carefully cut around the traced circle with an X-acto knife.

Glue on the Record

Now, here's where it gets really interesting. Take your record and glue that on top of the cork board. Here, in this example, I'm gluing down the vinyl record for Prince's Purple Rain. Again, I used E6000 Heavy Duty Adhesive. But, you can also use a hot glue gun or spray adhesive, whichever technique is more easier for you.

The final step is optional. You can add a layer of spray varnish to not only make your tray nice and shiny but to also prevent dust and scratches.

Ready to Serve

Now, you're ready to serve your snacks and more on your musical trays! You can make a set out of your old records. Arrange them by artist, decade or theme. My five trays I've made fit the theme of 80s icons. As you can see in the intro photo, the vinyl records I've used are...

  • Prince: Purple Rain
  • Bryan Adams: Reckless
  • Madonna (self titled album)
  • Culture Club: Colour By Numbers
  • Flashdance
