Giant Plush Dice

Normal dice are soo last century. Make a giant plush one instead!

Materials:

  • Cube of foam (mine was 22cm at the edges)
  • Colored fabric to cover the cube
  • Different colored fabric for the dots
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread

Make sure that you have enough fabric to cover all sides of the cube. If you have a large enough piece of fabric, you can cut out the whole cube template at once. Make sure to leave some space for the seams at the edges.

My piece of fabric was long and thin and so I cut a single long strip 4 times the length of the cube (plus about 3 cm for seams) and two squares, slightly larger than the cube (shown in black).

Finish the Template

If you had to stitch together the template, attach the extra squares with the help of the sewing machine.

Sewing the Edges

Try to fit the fabric over the cube the way it is supposed to fit in the end. Mark where the seams have to go.

Sew the seams with the sewing machine. While working, put the cube into the cover often to make sure everything fits right (it's sometimes easy to get cofused with the sides).

The corners are tricky to get right. There is an instructable [1] on this, which could help.

Sew all the edges till there is only a single flap of fabric left open.

Adding the Dots

For a traditional die you will need 21 dots (6+5+4+3+2+1). Nothing's stopping you from adding more sides with sixes though :)

Cut out your circles using a template that you can draw around for consistency (mine was 5cm in diameter).

Lay out the dots on the sides and mark their positions (with a pencil or similar).

Sew on the Dots

Use the sewing machine with a broad seam and thread the color of your circles to sew the dots onto the sides of the die. Use the markings to help position them. Be sure to go slow when sewing as the material needs to be turned a lot.

Close Up the Cube

The last three seams of the flap cannot be made with the sewing machine. Fold over the the sides and sew together by hand, pulling the sides together. You can squish the cube a bit, it will make the cover sit nice and tight.

If you wanted, you could include a zipper here, to allow removal of the cover.

You are done! Enjoy rolling your giant plush die!
