Giant Duct Tape Fish

With all the great duct tape colors available and a little imagination you can make a crazy fish. There are about six different colors of duct tape used in this project. Adding a little paint gives the fish just a little more character.

Start by making a sketch of your fish on a piece of paper.

Once you have a design you are happy with transfer it onto a piece of cardboard.

With a mat knife, cut out the fish.

To make the fish stand up, mount a piece of wood onto the fish. Drill a hole into the wood on the fish and a wood stand. Slide a wood dowel into the holes for a stand.

With old newspapers and lots of masking tape you can shape the body of the fish.

Roll up newspaper and hot glue it to the fins to add some detail and depth.

Roll up two balls of newspaper for the eyes.

Once you have the shape you desire, you are ready to add the color with the duct tape.

Start by laying down long strips of tape for the areas where you just want solid color. The solid areas can be decorated later with dots, lines or squiggles.

Cut out lots of circles to make the fish scales. Overlap the circles to create the look of scales. The best way to cut out these circles is to put down a long strip of tape and use an X-Acto knife to cut around a bottle the size of the circles you want.

Cutting out all the circles is a lot of work but once you add paint it creates a nice effect.

Paint the side fins before you attach them to the fish.

Use strips of tape to cover all the other parts of the fish. Wrap white duct tape around wood skewers and poke them into the mouth for evil teeth. Now you are ready for the final touches.

A little paint will make your fish just come alive.

To make the scales pop, apply paint then wipe off the excess with a paper towel. The paint will settle in the lines between the scales.

A black Sharpie works great to make the lines around the eyes.

Use brown paint to shade around the eyes, mouth and fins.

Now your fish is ready for a swim!
