Giant Cardboard Penny

This is a cardboard version if a penny, you could use any other coin but the penny might work better because you won't have to paint it so the color doesn’t look off. It could also work with other coins still.

Supplies

For this project you would need cardboard (of course) they should be varying thicknesses for the coin. You would also need a craft knife or a pair of scissors to cut the cardboard. Since coins are circular it is reasonable to also get a large cylindrical object to use as a way to trace a circle for the coin. You would also need glue and a permanent marker.

Trace the Base and the Rim of the Coin

For this step you would need to make three circles from the thick piece of cardboard. Do to this I used a large cylindrical object and traced it on to the thick cardboard. The reason you would need three is because two are for the rim of the coin and top and bottom of the coin.

Cut the Rim and the Base Out

After you finished tracing out the circles, it is time to cut them out to form the base and rim of the coin. For the base it is as simple as just cutting out the base. But for the rim you would have to cut the circle out and cut a smaller circle in that circle.

Glue the Rims to the Base

Once you are done cutting the rim and the base out you would now need to glue them together. The glue is used is ordinary glue because cardboard won't require any other type of special glue. You should try to only glue one side at a time because they may come off pretty easily if glue is still wet.

The Mint Mark and Date

For this step get a piece of thick cardboard and draw the date and mint mark. They should be mirrored though because they would have to be reversed in order to not show the permanent marker on the coin. Then cut the date and mint mark out and glue them to the base of the coin.

The Bust

For the bust start by using a thin piece of cardboard as the base of the bust. Draw the outline of the bust on that piece of thin cardboard. After cut out the first layer, you would need to draw a second layer on a similarly thich piece of cardboard. Then cut out the second layer and glue it to the base of the bust. If you want you could add more layers to the bust as you wish.

Tails

For the tails of a penny there is a Lincoln memorial which could be made the same way as how the bust was made. After gluing the tails' features to the base of the coin you could write the rest of the words on the coin that would be too hard to use cardboard to make.
