German Pancakes or Dutch Babies
German Pancakes as my family knows them, are known by multiple names. Dutch Babies, Bismarks, German Pancakes, and Dutch Puffs. The pancake part of the name may be a little deceiving as these types of pancakes are traditionally baked in the oven instead of on a stove top or griddle. The ingredients and directions are quite simple compared to other kinds of pancakes. This is mainly because most pancake recipes have more ingredients then the recipe that I use. I hope you enjoy!
Supplies
Oven
Mixing bowl
Mixer or blender
Oven Mits
9 x 13 glass pan
Measuring Cup (1 Cup)
Spatula
Butter (1/2 Stick)
Milk
Flour
6 Eggs
Optional Ingredients:
Apples (chopped)
Cinnamon (2-3 Tablespoons)
Optional Toppers:
Syrup (Usually always goes on top unless you don't like syrup, then you can sub it for jelly or something you like!)
Powdered sugar
Strawberries
Bananas
Apples
Peanut Butter
Jelly
Set Oven to Bake at 415 Degrees Fahrenheit
Place Pan With Butter in the Oven
Set your oven to 415 degrees Fahrenheit as you will need to melt the butter before putting the pancake mix in the pan. You will need 4 tablespoons of butter, or half a stick of butter. Unwrap the butter and put it in the 9 x 13 glass pan (does not have to be glass, any pan will work). Put the pan with the butter inside.
Mix Your Ingredients
While your butter is melting you will need to start on your mix. Here are the steps:
In a bowl:
Crack six eggs (I always crack the eggs first so that if I get any egg shells in the bowl I can take them out before I mix.)
Pour 1 cup of milk into the bowl with the eggs
Pour 1 cup of flour into the bowl with the eggs and the milk.
Optional: For more taste you may like to add cinnamon or apples, or both together! Either way the German Pancakes should taste wonderful!
When all of these ingredients have been put into the mix, take your mixer, whisk, or blender and mix the ingredients together. Mix well, you may think that the mix is too watery, don't worry, it's not. Your mix should be watery and little clumps in the mix are okay (but very little clumps).
DON'T FORGET YOUR BUTTER!
By the time you've mixed your ingredients your butter should be melted. In my experience I like to leave my butter in a little longer until the butter is a little bit burnt, it should be a brown color on the outside and normal yellow color in the middle. Take your butter out of the oven with your oven mits and place it on the oven top or on a towel on your counter.
Pouring Your Mix
Once you have set your pan on the oven top or counter you are going to pour your mix into the pan. In order to get the most out of your mix, you may want to use a spoon to get the rest out of the bowl and into the pan. Once that is done, place the pan into the oven.
Baking time should take 20-25 minutes. Based on how up to date your oven might be, time may vary so keep an eye on your German Pancakes.
Straight Out of the Oven
By the time 20-25 minutes is up, your German Pancakes should look something like the image shown above. Again, like the butter, I like to leave it in until the tops are a golden brown, it has a better taste in my opinion! So you'll take out your pancake and place it on a stove top or counter.
Your Final Product
Use your spatula to cut a piece of the German Pancake, any size you want! You can add anything you want to your Pancake. I usually like to put bananas, strawberries, syrup and to top it off powdered sugar! But again, be as creative as you like! Corner pieces are my favorites because of the brown crust at the top, some people, like my brothers, like the middle as it's usually the hottest piece!
Serves 6 adults, 1 piece each.
If you want more, I would advise making another batch! Do not double the recipe as it will come out wrong and really thick.
I hope you enjoy! Please leave me comments on successes and failures! I may be able to help you if you have any questions!
