Geometric Bottle Opener

I recently took a trip to rockler to pick up some pen blanks and I found a pack of bottle opener inserts. I thought I could use them in a fun little project. So I made a faceted bottle opener. What I like about this is it looks nice to sit on a table or desk but it has a hidden purpose of being a bottle opener.

I got a block of 3x3 wood to use for this project. To measure the correct height of the bottle opener I simply used my hand to measure it. I then used my miter saw to cut the block. You can easily use a miter box instead.

I used a small ruler to determine the center for the drilling the recess for the bottle opener insert to sit in. To make sure it was safe while drilling such a large hole I put the wood in a clamp.

I used a big forstner bit for the insert to sit flush with the wood. I took my time her so that the block of wood wouldnt catch and spin around. I then used a 1" bit to make another recess for the bottle cap to sit in for when you are opening the bottle. Next I drilled pilot hole for the screws so that they wouldn't strip.

I used a belt sander to create the various angles on the wood. You could use a normal sander it would do the same thing. This took some time and trial and errors. I wanted to make sure the geometric pattern didnt look too uniform. Once I was happy with the shape I put some Walnut stain on it.

I love how this project turned out. It was so fun and simple that anyone can make one. It has been very useful and the thing I like the most is that it can sit out in the open without it being an eye sore. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions or if you make one.
