Geode Candy

.MAGNIFICIENT AND REALISTIC this rock is nothing but a ROCKING CANDY

This Geode candy imitates the natural crystalline beauty of natural geodes and yet is sweet to please the taste buds.

I got this Idea from my Daughter's school science experiment and with a little research over the net-I came up with this technique of making candy geode. This has been a wonderful success and i am looking forward to occasion to make more of them.

You will need:

a small bowl

Aluminium foil

Sugar

Brown 1Cup

White 3 cups

water 1cup

liquid food color

essence of your choice.

Cut up the foil into smaller pieces.

Roll and crumble each piece to form small logs of uneven sizes and shapes.

Place these foil rolls along the bottom and sides of the bowl to make the inner surface uneven as you should find in a GEODE .

line a double folded foil into the bowl over the foil rolls. flatten and smoothen out the foil with your fingers so that it snugly fits the glass bowl.

Slightly grease the foil for easy pulling out of the geode.

Take 1/2 cup of brown sugar in a pan.4 tsp of water- just enough to moisten the entire sugar.

Heat up the pan so that all sugar begins to melt.

Once most of the sugar is liquifies and a few bubbles are formed- quickly pour out the liquid sugar int the bowl.

Swirl the bowl around making sure the whole inside is coated.

Allow the layer to cool.

Keep swirling to make this layer uniformly thick. By the law of gravity you will get the thickest part at the bottom of the bowl.

Being a super saturated soltution his layer quickly hardens in around 10 minutes.

so whilst his sets begin with the next layer.

the white layer:

Repeat the same prices using a 1/2 cup WHITE sugar.

Pour- Swirl and allow to set.

Wait another 10 minutes.

Proceed to the next step.:-

On drying this gave a rather translucent crystalline look...I was expecting more of a whitish touch.....but...never mind.

Once the last two layers have hardened begin with the 3rd layer.

Boil 1 cup of water.

Add 3 cups of sugar and stir till all crystals COMPLETELY dissolve.

Add essence and food coloring of your choice.

(At first i wanted to make Purple(Red+ blue) to resemble an amethyst but I ran out of red color so...had to settle in for the blue crystals.)

anyway it still had final satisfaction factor.

Wait this the solution cools.

Once cool pour it out into the bowl.

Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel( to prevent it catching any dust and set aside for anywhere from 24- 48 hours so that the crystals can grow on the base.

After sitting for 24 hours open the towel. If there is a crust formed on top crack it. there might be still some fluid in the center of the geode.(In case you think that the crystals are not yet the size you wished for then let it sit for another 24 hrs) Pour out the fluid. Beautiful crystal formation is seen.

Carefully pull out the geode from the underlying Foil.

Place it upside down on a wire rack to let it completely dry out.

I cracked the upside down geode in the center with a pestle to give me numerous candy sized geode candies.

All my precious ones are very happy with the outcome....me too!
