Hi everyone, I'm Ashley (Handmade with Ashley). I'm a big geek and a woodworker and in this Instructable I'm sharing how to build a 4' tall Goomba that doubles as a lumber storage cart. This is not the most practical of lumber carts, but it was a fun project that fits with my growing collection of retro video game garage decor.

(For sneak peeks on upcoming projects follow me on Instagram and for more DIY project tutorials check out my project gallery!)

Let's get started on the build!

The following items are some of the tools and supplies I gathered to build my Goomba lumber storage cart (affiliate links):

Watch a video tutorial on the project down below:

Supplies

Supplies are listed up above.

Draw Grid Lines and Router Along the Grid Lines

Cut a sheet of plywood in half. It should be 48" x 48". Use a ruler to mark grid lines space 3″ apart. Each square represent a single pixel on 8-bit Goomba.

Install a v-groove router bit and route along the grid lines. Use a clamp edge guide to ensure straight lines.

Cut Out Goomba's Silhouette

Trace out the silhouette of Goomba and then cut out the Goomba’s shape with a jigsaw.

Paint Goomba's Pixels

Sand between the grooves and sand the surface of Goomba. I used a scrap piece of wood to support the sandpaper as I sanded between the grooves.

Tape off sections and spray paint the Goomba’s pixels.

Cut Plywood for the Lumber Cart Dividers

Break down the sheet of plywood into the following parts:

  • 42″ x 11 7/8″ (Dividers) x 4
  • 24″ x 11 7/8 (Base)
  • 24" x 8 3/4"

If you choose to use pocket hole joinery to assemble the cart, drill pocket holes at the bottom and long side of each divider.

Build a Base for the Cart

I used some scrap 2x4s as base for the cart. This provides additional support for the caster wheels.

I used half lap joints to construct the base. Alternatively, you could just drill the 2x4 directly onto the base.

Assemble the Cart

To assemble the cart:

  1. Attach the dividers to the divider base
  2. Attach the dividers + base to the back of the 4' tall Goomba.
  3. Attack a piece of wood to the front of the dividers (the board to prevent wood from sliding out)

Once the cart is assembled, attach the 2x4s for the caster supports to the base of the cart. Install 3" caster wheels to each corner of the base.

Enjoy!

Goomba is my new home for storing scrap wood. It's a nice addition to my shop and doesn't talk up too much floor space.

Thanks for checking out my Instructable!
