Galaxy Pencil Holder and Lamp
What inspired me?
Well, I love galaxy. I mean who doesn't? Its not just a beautiful design but the galaxy is an immensely interesting place. I love making projects such as this one with my boyfriend as its cheap, easy and looks fantastic. We also used the holder as a lamp. This looked amazing. If you look at the bottom two pictures you will see it being used as both a lamp and a holder.
For this instructable, you will need;
- One masons jar (this can be any size it doesn't really matter. also, it can be any type of jar its just this is what I had).
- Red Acrylic paint
- Blue Acrylic paint
- Black Acrylic paint
- White Acrylic paint -
- Two sponges
Okay, once you have these, you are ready to start your galaxy jar. Also, remember to place news paper or something done in case paint drips on your work surface or floor.
First Coat
Step One - First Coat
Using a sponge (remember only to use this for the blue parts) begin to apply the paint in layers onto the jar. Make sure it look patchy so you can add other colours like purple and pink later on.
This is the most important stage as if you don't mix your colour correctly, you will not end up with the galaxy jar. Mix a small amount of blue acrylic paint into a small amount of red paint to get purple, you can add black or white depending on if you want dark or light purple. Begin to apply this to the areas you want too, or just fill in the gaps.
Second Coat
Step Two - Second Coat
Using a sponge, apply some red paint to the surface of the jaw, filling In a few spaces left after the blue was added.
Now its time to add the purple paint, make sure the paint on the jar is still a bit wet to allow the different colours to blend well. Use a sponge and neatly dab at the surface to apply small coats of the purple. Continue to dab the surface with a new sponge until the paint begins to mix and blend better.
Last Coat
Step Three - Last Step
Continue to add different colours and different shades of the colours to get a the galaxy effect you are looking for. Remember to also paint the bottom but do not place the jar onto that face as it will cause the paper underneath to stick to it and ruin the finish.
Finished!
This is the boring stage...waiting. The paint will set but if it is knocked or scraped it will chip off. Be aware of the places you put it.
Place the finished product onto of a light or look at Zaclewis98 page to find how to make a LED circuit.
On top of this it can be used for all sorts of things. For example storage for your small things, pencils, school equipment and much more.
