GONK Droid From Junk
My family and I just finished moving; out of town and back to the countryside so 2 little cub scouts can have plenty of room to explore.
After the dust settled a huge issue came to be. My nice new work shop building was filled with empty storage bins from the pair down.
Also I found the need for some yard storage.
AND my A3-8d Droid (see my $20 Droid build) was getting lonely.
With all this what is a feller to do??
Make a Gonk of course!

In this build ill show you how I made a Yard Statue of a Star Wars Gonk Droid from some cheap plastic containers and upcycled scraps of sundried items.
This statue also has storage space for yard tools and what ever else you fancy!
So lets start making!

Gather All Your Junk
First thing you will need to do is see what kinda junk treasures you have to work with.
To copy my build you will need:
- 2 deep bottom storage bins of nearly the same size and style
- Lumber scraps: 2x4, 4x4, 2x6
- Corrigated tube (optional but nice)
You could use some gallon paint cans or the like for the legs if you dont have lumber available.
Aside from the major components if you have any small broken toys/electronics/bottles/-- anything with an interesting shape will do. These small random idems will he used to give the droid character in the paint and finish steps.

This step is pretty straight forward.
Build a simple stand that consists of legs and feet with a platform on top to secure the first tub.
The pictures above show the platform i went with to hold the 2 bins up.

Build the Body
I missed a lot pic opurtunities in this
step, but it all happened so fast :-)
and did i say how such fun we had building this Gonk?
First attach the right-side up tub to the leg stand as seen above.
I used some scrap shelving board strips to clamp the tub to the leg stand of the Gonk Droid.
Next
I screwed a few 3/4" plywood strips to the sides and back to make centering tabs that will locate the inverted tub.
This pretty much it for the body other than decorations and paint.
Next Make it fancy!

Paint and Final Notes
Im no expert prop builder but my appoach to the paint was prepping the plastic with sandpaper.
My first coat of paint was a light grey and was a very light mist coat. I alternated a few coats of various shades of grey until the entire Gonk Droid was covered.
I made a few simple rectangle stencils with cardstock to make the yellow and red stripes.
I then misted the Gonk with both yellow and red keeping the paint can about 2ft from the Gonk.
Final coats of paint were grey in touch up passes to blend the color mists and the overspray from the stencil work.
This Gonk is intended to look very well used and be a sort of military/industrial thingy so I was deliberate in not being careful about the stencil work or paint perfection.
After all the layers of paint I scuffed the edges and random areas with sandpaper.
For a make do hinge simply drill holes in the back side where the 2 tub handles are and loop wire ties or wire through the holes.
And DONE!
