Fusion Clock

For this time, i have a very rare resource of mine to work on instructable for this contest.

During 90's when we were children, my father (who was then working with State Government Services, Tamilnadu, India) has got us few antique clocks and other wooden items got through auction. Though we do not have much knowledge about the history of the making, we found it amazing and huge though the clocks itself were not functioning yet elegant.

Years till date, the clocks has travelled several miles inside the home..:p East to West and North to South. And this clock contest has given me an idea of remaking it to a new model, further to use it as a clock itself! Indeed, to give back the lost pride :-)

For this challenge, i have planned to use the numbers painted over metal plates i.e, dial (in a old yet cherishable font) to give a look as ancient. But other outside essentials with latest/new materials. So here, we go into the story of the making.

Designing part

This part is truly based on one's interest. As i am someone inclined towards nature, flowers etc i have created one theme based on it.

Acrylic paint, color sketches

White paper sheets

Metal strings - to create tree branch like structure

Green colour cloth piece - for rolling it over the surface of the tree branch

Brown sheets - to cover a single branch of a tree

Birds picture (or any other choice)

Creativity and Interest

The attached pictures present, how i de-assembled the parts of both latest model and older model.

I used laptop screen cleaning solution to clear out the dust. But we have to be bit careful while wiping, the letters in paint gets affected itseems. If you have any other solution, please do use.

I tried an approach of keeping the second(s) hand from the latest clock and the hour, minute hand from the older one. But the movement machine (of the latest model) did not support it. So dropped that idea.

Now, looking at the exterior of the clock it will look dull if i leave it with dial encapsulated into cardboard structure. So i planned to keep nature as theme (cardboard will also support keeping it look like wooden insulation).

Metal strings were cut and bend to appropriate shapes like the branches of plants/trees. These metal strings were wrapped with green colour cloth stripes and one of the branch with brown sheet as well.

Flowers:

I wanted to create a Rose flower, Calla lily added to the branch.

For Rose flower, i cut the white sheet into small shapes(for rose petals), then rolled it around a thin stick (pen refill); Rose flowers made out of crepe paper looks more like real flowers. Due to lockdown, there is not possibility to get from shops so i crushed the rolled paper(into stick) from both sides. This way, the petals will look more or like one made from crepe paper.

For Carpels, i used small yellow colour stick notes. This was first rolled over the base metal string. Now, the crushed paper petals (refer attached pictures) is tied with the metal string one below the another with threads, to make it look like rose flower.

For Calla lily, i used the yellow stick note sheet as carpel and a single petal of rose flower.

I coloured the rose with red acrylic colour.

Leaves:

For the leaves, i painted a white colour sheet with green - water colour. Once it got dried, cut them into shapes of leaves and tied it to the metal string.

Daisy flowers/few asteraceae:

As i am fond of daisy flowers, i created :

a. flower petals of five varied size

b. five varied size circular pattern for carpel

Stick them with glue to make flowers. Almost at the end of the making, i coloured them and glued to the case cover designed(refer later steps).

To add some better look for the added features, i have used colouring at appropriate places.

As acrylic do not spread at all places, i used red colour sketch.

In order to make the bird not to be flown away, i used some wooden sticks(coconut tree) to stick it straight.

Body of the clock, was made out of cardboard.

I used thin strip of cardboard, to add support for the dial not to get fallen inside.

I cut the backside of the main body(half the movement machine), to make it easy to insert and remove the battery, when required.

To make the Outer case, i used cardboard cut into hexagon shape though the dial of the clock is circular. I sticked the polythene sheet to hexagon cardboard with rubber based adhesive.

I tied the colour beads to the holes present in the dial.

I used another cardboard strip and glued to the bottom of the base of the clock, to make it look as a stand!
