Hello Friends 🀩 I'm excited to share one of my latest upcycled Project. From 1970's "Formica" high gloss laminated display cabinet to Black Beauty πŸ–€β€οΈ
Many of us may come across old furniture in very good condition but hesitate to take on the project coz it can be difficult to deal with high gloss finish furniture, can require to invest so much time & effort.
In this DIY I managed to cut the time of by using right products and recycling this display cabinet so satisfied , another rescued edition furniture to my home , so happy πŸ₯°
Hope you gals like it too πŸ‘β€οΈ

Supplies

Rustoleum gloss black spray paint
Rustoleum mettallic gold spray paint
Modpodge gloss finish
Brake fluid
Placemats

Painters Tape

Screenshot_20210412-150923~2.png
Place a painters tape ( masking tape) all around the Glass edge.

Removing Hardware

At first removing glass front & shelf and hardware.

Primer - the Most Important Step-

Screenshot_20210412-150938~2.png
Screenshot_20210408-205629~2.png
I used Zinsser Extreme Adhesion Primer for this project. As this primer has strong adhesion to able to bonding on almost every surface with out sanding.

Applying the Primer

There's no any specific way to apply this primer. Like any other primer just brush it on / use a roller. I used both, at first I used sash brush to edges coz I don't want to primer touches to gold trim, and then roll it on for smooth look. It's a water based primer so easy to clean with a damp cloth if touches anywhere that I don't wanna paint it. Also needs to stir about 10 mins before using.

Removing Masking Tape

Screenshot_20210412-151414~2.png
Masking tape ( painters tape) should be removed before primer dries. As the primer needs to left on 24 hours for fully adhere , leaving the masking tape that long may cause lifting the paint later.

Prepare for Painting

Screenshot_20210412-151505~2.png
24 hours passed and now time for painting. Retape everything that don't want to paint touch it. This time covering all the side glass front & back& the mirror. Also the gold trims & metal part on the legs

After Painting

Screenshot_20210412-151827~3.png
Spray painting finished and again before gets fully dry carefully taking off all the masking tape and plastic sheets from the glass and back mirror, don't worry we are not going to tape it on again πŸ˜ƒ

Touch Up & Clean Up

Screenshot_20210412-151947~2.png
Screenshot_20210412-152020~2.png
If needing any little touch up , just spray the paint inside one of the empty can lid and use a cotton swap to paint where missed the paint.
Use mineral turpentine to clean up any paint on the glass or on trims. Make sure not to touch the painted surfaces of the furniture.

The primer works with any paint , so u can use your favourite paint. I choose Rustoleum gloss Black spray paint coz of the covid19 circumstances most of the products out of shelves and not able to find gloss finish black color brush on paint. Still perfectly fine , coz will have much more smooth finish πŸ˜„
So first started underneath the drawer, by the time I finish the cabinet , that will be dry enough to flip over and spray inside.
As usual wear protective mask, well ventilated area, and start spraying light coats ,till full coverage.

Working on Rust

While the paint drying , started to work on the hardware , need to clean the rust. One of the easiest , affordable way ( thanks to Dad πŸ₯°) using brake fluid. So cover all the hardware with brake fluid and let it immerse for several hours. Then with wire brush ( sometimes don't even need one) all the rust& dirt easily comes off. Then cleaning the brake fluid from hardware use Methylated spirits with water.

Painting Metal Parts

For the drawer handles , I placed the masking tape on the middle ( as that section still shinny in good condition) the rest I just sprayed on with rustoleum mettallic gold spray paint. For the small metal parts on the legs, decanting paint from gold spray paint, waited for couple of hours then ready to use, unfortunately my small airbrush machine stop working so had to use brush , coz the decanting paint is too thin I can only do small touch ups let it dry and come back to it till the desire covarege achieved.

Decoupage the Furniture

Screenshot_20210412-152709~2.png
After the paint completely dries , I decoupage it with placemats πŸ˜„ couldn't find nice metallic gold decoupage paper but come across beautiful mettallic gold color placemats ( costs only a dollar πŸ€‘) so decided to use it and I think perfect idea 🀩 cut them on the size where Id like to place it ,( Infront & sides of the drawer also inner sides of the cabinet), using modpodge gloss finish, easy way to do this put modpodge first on the furniture let it get tacky abit ( around 10mins) then placing the decoupage item, and add more modpodge on top. Let it dry ..

Placing Back the Hardware

Screenshot_20210412-152720~2.png
After modpodge dries place back the hardware & glass shelf , carefully Glass front ( must admit placing back the glass sliding doors not so easy).

Finished ! Perfection 😍
