Fun Gluten Free Train Cake!
This is a train cake I made for my little brother for his birthday. He loved it!
Bake Your Cake
I am using a gluten free cake mix for this recipe, but feel free to use whatever you like. The one thing that you need to do with your cake is make sure you double it. You will need some extra cake to make all your cars!
Pans for Cars
For my cars, I am using four mini bread pans, one normal size and two cupcakes. Normal sized bread pans will work fine too, you just probably won't get as many cars out of them and there won't be the different size.
Take your pans and add a bit of olive oil. Rub it around until all sides off the pan are covered, then fill slightly over half way with your cake batter and bake.
Freeze
When your cakes have come out of the oven, allow them to cool for a few minutes on cooling racks, then put them in a container and put in the freezer for 2-3 hours, or until fully frozen.
Frosting
While your cake is freezing, use your time to make your frosting. I recommend using this buttercream frosting recipe, one of my previous instructables.
When you have finished your frosting, add dye. I have separated the frosting into four different bowls, one yellow, one orange, one light green, one light blue. Make sure, though, that you leave a bit of frosting uncolored for things like pieces together broken parts, or sticking on candy.
First Train Car
When your cakes are frozen, take out the largest one. I am going to color it green (on request from my little brother). For this train, you are going to need:
2 cupcakes
1 Twizzlers
1 cake cone
2 mini starbursts
~~~~~
Cut one side of each of the cupcakes and frost the cup side. Then stick them together and set them on the far side of the cake. Frost over them, then use some of the white frosting and make the little window eyes on each of the two cupcakes. Take two little yellow starbursts and set them in the middle of each window eye. Cut out a piece of the twizzler and use it as eyebrows over the window.
Take the cake cone and set it in the middle of the cake car as the chimney/smoke stack.
Take some green sprinkles and sprinkle them over the cupcakes.
You are done with the first car!
Second Car
For the second car you are going to need:
Orange frosting
3 Twizzlers
Lots of M&Ms
~~~~~
First, frost the cake over, then on the two longest sides, place two twizzlers. You might have to snip a little bit off each end to make them fit. Also, you might need to use some of the white frosting as glue to keep the twizzlers in place. Taking the last twizzler, cut in half and use for the smaller sides.
Taking a handful or more M&Ms, sprinkle them on the top of the cake in between the twizzlers.
Third and Fourth Cars
For the third car you are going to need:
Yellow frosting
Mini Starbursts (for third)
Gummy bears (for fourth)
7 or so Twizzlers
~~~~~
This is just about exactly the same as the first car, so I won't repeat myself. But instead of using M&Ms, use mini Starbursts for the third and for the fourth, use gummy bears. You can follow the pictures too:)
When you have finished these cars, take the extra twizzlers and connect the cars with them as seen above ↑
Caboose
For the last (but in no way least) car you need:
A bit of each colored frosting
Some mini Starbursts
~~~~~
Instead of frosting the whole cake in one solid color, frost in one inch chunks, with each inch being another color. When finished, outline with starbursts. Then connect to the blue car with a twizzler.
Oreos Wheels
Take 10 Oreos and put two on each side of the cars. These will be your wheels. If they are having trouble sticking, feel free to use some of the extra frosting as glue to stick them on.
Enjoy!
Serve and enjoy! These are so much for to make, so make sure you have the same amount of fun eating it!
