Fun Glasses Frame Replacements

Kids often break their glasses frames, but what if you could fix the old frames instead of buying a new pair? Or even better, what if you could make a whole new custom set of glasses frames? We started out with a broken pair of glasses and worked on replacing the old broken parts with brand new 3D printed replacements as well as creating entirely new glasses frames that could fit functional lenses.

Supplies

Here are the materials/tools we used:

  • Old pair of broken glasses
  • Calipers
  • Screwdriver
  • Computer for CAD modeling
  • 3D Printer
  • PLA 3D printing filament

Measuring the Old Glasses

First, we had to measure the old pair of glasses in order to design a replacement set of arms.

We chose to make a Spider-Man themed glasses frame in order to display the potential for customized frames especially when dealing with kids' glasses. We made the arms of the glasses into Spider-Man's arms shooting out webs and the front of the frames into a web that could be altered to fit the exact size and shape of real lenses.

We printed the design in PLA 3D printing filament on a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon 3D printer.

Once the parts were printed and ready, we attached the new arms onto the old frames. We also assembled the custom Spider-Man frames (without lenses).
