Fully Adjustable Wooden Weight Bench

I am so excited to be writing an instructable!

This is the full tutorial of the wooden weight bench I built which is based off of Afajarito's design:

https://www.instructables.com/Weight-Bench-5-posit...

I also made a video which you can watch to get a better idea of my methods.

Here's the video of the bench.

Here's a montage that I made as well

Sketchup Model

This is the original sketch-up model which I used to figure out how everything would work. Couldn't find this, so had to make a new one

Materials: Hardware

The original build by afajarito on instructables used long metric screws which I didn't have access to at homedepot, so I improvised. I recommend getting thicker threaded rods, but I used 1/4" zinc rods which bent under the weight.
I also forgot to mention to get drawer slides which can be put under the back-rest. Otherwise your seat-back needs to be installed at the highest point.

Finally, L-Brackets for positioning the back and seat as well as reinforcing the frame are recommended.

Materials: Wood

The 2x2s I acquired by cutting 2x4s in half

This is the frame. I used glue and dovetail joints. I recommend using quality wood-glue and L-brackets at the bottom of the joint to reinforce it.

You'll be cutting along the line.

I used a dovetail joint which I glued and let set before I made the cut. Scroll down for those pictures.

Here are the pictures for the dovetail joint

I created a template that I used to mark where to cut.

The long leg is the female and the short leg is the male.
The long leg then sits onto the short leg.

This is the backrest. I put drawer slides between the plywood and back bars. This allows the back to slide to the bottom when in an upright position while also allowing it to fully decline

The seat doesn't need sliders

The way I made the feet was not suitable for the tools I had.

I decided to go with bridal joints for the leg stabilizers. Maybe not the best decision, but if you decide to go with this, here are some measurements.
I found the center of the remaining piece of wood I had which was 16.25. Then I found half of that which was 8.125. I made the insert 1.25". Marked around the whole block.

If you don't have the proper carving tools, I recommend the alternative method which uses a wood insert nut and threaded rod.

If you decide to go the same route as I did, you can check out the images.

Here's everything sort of assembled. I had glued the dovetail joint and let it set before cutting

Screwed on the boards (drawer slides for the back rest).

Glued and stained it as well. Added tape around the wood for safety

Here are the measurements for where the brackets go

These are the brackets I used since I had these. I recommend using two brackets side by side or one wide bracket.

Optional Screws

Optional screw for the backrest so it doesn't slide all the way down when in decline.
