Fruits & Veggies Piano

Our Interactive Music Programming group decided to make a piano out of fruits and vegetables and a Makey Makey kit!

Supplies

fruit and vegetables.jpg
  • Assorted fruits and veggies of your choice
  • We used:
  • Three apples
  • One sweet potato
  • One lime
  • One grape
  • A Makey Makey kit
  • Strand of copper tape
  • Max software
  • PC/Mac
  • USB adaptor (if necessary)

Collect All Materials

  • Download the sample code.
  • Collect all desired fruits and veggies
  • Make sure there is less wax coating on whatever produce you choose, as it might prevent the fruit from being played easily
  • Begin attaching provided wires to your Makey Makey

Connect Makey Makey to the Sample Code

Connect the Makey Makey to your PC/Mac using the provided wire and an adapter if necessary. Then, plug in as many wires as you would like. Attach the wires to the provided alligator clips. Once you've done this, enter the ASCII number into the sample code for the letters assigned to each wire.

Connecting the Fruits and Veggies

Once you've connected the Makey Makey to your PC/Mac, attach the other ends of each alligator clip to the fruits and veggies you have chosen. They won't be able to produce sound until you complete the next step.

Grounding Your Piano

Connect the grounding wire on the Makey Makey to your strip of copper wire. The strip of copper wire should be laid out in front of the fruits and veggies for ease of access.

Play Your Piano

Now that you've connected all of the wires, you're able to play your fruits and veggies piano! Hold onto the copper wire with one hand whenever you would like to play a note. With the other hand, touch whatever fruit you have assigned to a given pitch. From here, you are able to adjust the timbre and pitches as desired.
