From Milk Packaging to a Shiny Hat

A hat that reflects sunlight, Yes that's what I I made from milk packaging. Even better than a normal hat since in addition to the shade it gives you like normal hats, it partially reflects sunlight, more precisely infrared light. More your material is silver, the more it sends back more infrared light. This is the same process as solar ovens which also reflect sunlight. The survival blanket is also a good example because with its silver side, it reflects sunlight to cool the person inside.

You will find a video of the hat test at the end of the project.

A hat that can also be worn in the rain: since its initial use was to contain liquid, it is therefore waterproof provided of course that there are no holes in your hat.

Like what we can do great things from banal object of our daily life, a good way to recycle.

You will need:

  • milk packaging or a fruit juice packaging
  • glue (some glues may not be compatible with this material)
  • scissors
  • paper covered with a layer of plastic
  • paper
  • compass
  • pencil
  • eraser
  • ruler

To start, take your head circumference.

I gave you the formula to find the radius of your head circumference, this is what we will use to make the size of the hat. Then I put the plan of the hats, you can take a look at it, I put my head measurement as an example and don't forget to replace it with yours.I think I don't have much to explain on that. Feel free to ask questions if you don't understand something, I'll be happy to answer them as soon as possible.

Give a Rectangular Shape

Cut the packaging into a rectangular shape to make them easier to use later.

Take a rectangular packaging and draw two parallel lines 2 cm from the edge of the length each to give a space of about 16.5 cm between them. Then draw lines 3 cm apart starting from the width of the rectangle, fold inwards with a ruler following the lines spaced 3 cm apart.

After drawing these two lines, you can notice that small rectangles are drawn on the edges, so remove every other rectangle as shown in black in the photo.

Make more like this until you have the length of your head circumference. Don't forget the 3 cm extra on each rectangle to connect them together.

Paste the Components

Now glue the components we just cut out to give a cylindrical shape.

Try it on if it's your size and adjust it if it doesn't.

Make the Brim and the Top Piece

Take two rectangle packaging and glue them together. Then draw two circles corresponding to the measurements on the plan of the hat, it means that the small circle radius is the radius of your head circumference and the radius of the large circle is the circumference of your head +7 cm. Then cut out the two circles.

Make a second like this.

Glue the Brim

Take one side of the two holes of the hat circumference, Tuck the hat circumference into the hole of the circle by putting the shiny part towards the top of the hat and glue the two parts together using the small rectangular ends : first put glue on the parts where I have put some color green and then glue them with the brim. Then take the second brim and glue it with the circle already in place, this time putting the shiny part towards the bottom of the hat.

Putting two layers like this one helps to reinforce the solidity of the hat.

Glue the Top Piece

Now take the two small circles that were inside the circles that we just glued, first take one and glue it from the inside of the top of the hat by putting the small ends of the rectangle towards the interior. The green dots indicate where to put glue. Then glue the other circle this time from the outside, putting the shiny side out.

Fill in the Holes

Now take two laminated paper that is around your head in length and 1 cm in width, fold them in half and on one of the sides folded in half, cut it every 3 or every 1.5 cm, both work . Then stick them on the parts where the different parts of the hat meet which are on the top and on the bottom of the hat circumference. Glue them as in the photo

Decorated

Technological but also stylish, you can decorate it by putting a ribbon around it or sticking stickers, make it match your style. Decorated or undecorated, it's up to you.

Well, we've finished the project. I hope that this pleased you.

You will find just below the hat test video: I compared the shiny hat to a normal hat, a cap and I left them in the sun for an hour. Explanations of the test are in the video.
