Friendly Tote

With so many plastic bags in the ocean, we decided to do something with them. So we created a crochet tote out of many supermarket plastic bags.

For this project, you will need a LOT of plastic bags. The amount of plastic bags will depend on how big you want your tote to be. You can use different colors to make designs.

I use a size L (8 mm) crochet hook

Supplies

Plastic bags

Preparing Your Bags

First, you need to make sure your plastic bags are clean. Wash the bags, and dry them. Once they are dry, flat them out and cut the bottom and handle off the bags.

Making Your "yarn"

Cut strings about one inch wide. Tie the string together and make a long string with all the strips and create a ball of plastic yarn.

1. Make a length of 70 chains and connect the last and first chain together

2. Make two chains and yarn around the hook.

3. Insert hook into 3rd chain from hook—yarn around hook and loop through the chain. Thread around the hook and pull through the first two loops on the hook. (I call it double crochet) Repeat the process until you have reached how big you want your bag.

4. Once you have reached your size, crochet only six double crochet and create the length of your strap for your bag.

5. Once you have reached your desired length, crochet it to the other side

6. To finish your tote, crochet the bottom together.
