Frayed Hem Top DIY
Fraying your hems is a fun way to update an old woven tee and create a cool fashion-forward style. All you need is a t-shirt made from a woven textile like cotton or silk, plus your typical sewing tools like a seam ripper, scissors and sewing machine.
I loved the final result and I'll be applying this technique to a few projects I have coming up!
Prepare Your Tee
I measured 2.5 inches away from the neck and then used a curved ruler to make my tee into a tank. After removing one sleeve, I folded the shirt over to cut the other side so that it matched.
But you can implement this technique by simply cutting off the finished hems from the neck, sleeves and/or bottom of your shirt.
Sew 1/4 - 3/8 in Away From Your Raw Edge
To prevent your shirt from completely unraveling after you cut raw edges, you need to sew 1/4 - 3/8 inches away from the edge. I used a plain straight stitch but you can also use a zig zag stitch.
Use a Seam Ripper to Create Your Frayed Edge
Using your seam ripper, pull threads out one-by-one to create your frayed edge. If your seam is completely straight (aka the bottom of your top), the threads will come out easily. If your seam is curved (aka neck or sleeves), this will take a bit more time and you'll need to work in sections rather than pulling a single thread out completely.
Rock It!
Dress it up or down and enjoy!
