Frankenstein Pick and Treat

This is quite a disgusting idea that we found on the web and wanted to try for a school halloween fair and disco. It is not difficult to do and worked really well at the school.

The idea is that you have to retrieve halloween objects from the slime hidden in the nose of Frankenstein. eughhh...

if you do you then get sweets/candy as a treat...

You will need:

• 4 x A2 boards in 4mm
• Large sheet of chipboard backing (c.10mm in depth)
• Wood to create a stand (I used wood that was 2.3 x 5cm in width, depth)
• Frankenstein SVG file (link below)
• A pot of slime (this one here)
• Halloween plastic toys
• Large plastic tub
• Some treats - sweets / candy...
• Large sheet

Tools

• Access to laser cutter
• Wood glue
• Drill
• Wood primer
• Paints - green, black, red, white and yellow
• Staplegun
• Bolts and wing nuts
• Jigsaw

I do not have the image rights to the SVG file but it can be downloaded here on Dupercut for 1 USD. Great value and the picture works really well.

I have asked permission to upload the four SVG files here but failing that the process is quite simple.

• Firstly increase the size in Inkscape (or equivalent) using the scaling tool to 1045mm x 840mm.
• Then separate into four pieces - one for each piece of A2 wood. This means breaking the paths where the lines cross the 4mm sheets. The process to do in Inkscape is quite simple and can be seen here
• Finally make sure that you colour any parts you want to cut in one colour and the parts you want engraved in another colour. I cut out the eyes and also the nose. The SVG can then be moved into Lightburn or RDWorks to use on the laser.

For lasering - the cut speed I used was 8% intensity and 150mm/s for the engraving and 60% intensity and 25mm/s speed.

The result after lasering is shown in the image on the four sheets of plywood.

Important - remember to cut out the nose from the chipboard underneath using a jigsaw.

The steps here are simple.

1. Add a white wood primer on the backing chipboard and also on the four plywood boards.
2. Paint the backing a navy and black combination. Whilst still wet add in some white clouds and mix them a bit with the navy underneath. It should be moody and dark.
3. Then paint the four panels with the dark green paint in broad brush strokes. One coat should do or it is too dark.
4. Add the black outlines where the engraved markings are and paint the teeth white. Shade as required.
5. Finally glue the four pieces of the plywood to the chipboard backing

The result should look like my picture here.

In the next step you need to add a nose so that the kids have to put their hand into.

I have attached the SVG file that we used.

This just needs gluing together and then painting in the same way.

We also created a sign using this ETSY SVG here and a slime typeface from this site here.

I cut out the letters with the laser and painted bright yellow behind them before attaching the sign with glue.

Create a simple stand for the chipboard using x by y wood and bolts.

Ensure the whole chipboard face tilts back a little to ensure that it does not fall forward onto someone.

Then add a sheet at the back to hide the pot of slime using a staplegun.
