Foosball and Air Hockey Mashup Game
Hello, I am a senior in high school, and I created this game as a fun way to waste time with friends. The basis of the game is that there are two players each on opposite sides. Both players have a magnet below the board that they control, and it is connected to a magnet above the board. The players move around their magnets and hit a ball back and forth and try to make goals. First to 10 goals wins. The players are also not allowed to cross their magnet over their half of the board. The magnet adds an extra aspect of the game that makes players pay more attention to whether they're still in control of their "player". This entire game was made out of scrap material that I found around my house and only took me a couple hours to build. I think it takes the force and movement part of air hocky and combines it with the round ball part of Foosball while also bringing in the new magnetism aspect.
Supplies
Cardboard
4 Magnets (relatively strong)
A Ball to Play With (I used a Lego head)
Box Cutter
Scotch Tape
Paint (optional, I used green, blue, grey, and yellow)
Prepare Cardboard
Gather a good amount of cardboard, I used to medium sized boxes. Then completely flatten all of the cardboard.
Cut the Arena Floor
Use the box cutter to cut out a rectangle in the card board. Make it whatever size you want the arena floor to be, your arm has to at least reach the halfway point from underneath.
Prepare the Arena Stand
Cut out two rectangles of the same size out. The height should be a comfortable length to play while sitting. Then add tape to add support to the pieces if necessary. Mainly add the tape if there are any creases or cuts in these pieces, they need to be strong enough to hold the arena floor.
Tape the Pieces Together
Tape the 2 rectangles that you cut in the last step to the arena floor so that they will hold it up like a table. I used some extra overlap for support, but it is mainly necessary that they just hold the arena floor up off the ground at a comfortable height to play.
Adding a Connecting Piece of Cardboard
Cut out another rectangle of cardboard for the arena supports to stand on. Then tape them securely to the cardboard. This should result cardboard box with only four sides and your arms should be able to move freely under the arena floor.
Add the Arena Walls
Cut out 2 rectangular pieces for the long edges the of arena, and 2 for the short edges. These pieces should all line up with the four sides of the arena floor. This will prevent the ball from rolling off the arena. Then tape all the pieces you cut out to the arena floor so that they all stand up perpendicular to the floor. This should look almost like a giant rectangular dish.
Add the Goals.
Cut out four small rectangles of the same size out. Then tape them like shown in the picture to make equal sized goals on each end of the arena.
Testing the Game
Get your magnet and put two on top of the floor and two below the ones below should each combine with one on top on each side. Then use your hand to move the magnets around underneath the floor and make sure the move relatively smoothly on top. Then get your ball and see if you can use the magnets to hit it around and in the goal.
Painting the Floor
Painting it is optional, I just think it adds to the overall look of the game and makes it feel more real. I decided to paint the floor green like a field. I just used paint to cover the entire floor of the arena.
Paint the Walls
I used dark blue for the walls and for the goal posts. Just paint the entirety of the walls and goal post and try your best to avoid getting the blue paint on the green floor.
Add the Field Lines
I based this look off of a soccer field. I drew a grey line down the middle of the arena and drew a circle in the center. Then I drew grey lines perpendicular to the end of the goal post to the walls of the arena. I drew these in grey because that area is not in the goal range and ball must pass between the goal posts to count as a goal.
Adding the Goal Lines
I drew a yellow line between each of the goal areas. This indicates the line the ball as to pass to be considered a goal. I also added the fun text of "score!" on each end to emphasize that that's where to aim, and to congratulate the players on any goals that they make.
