How to Carve a Flower Design in a Pumpkin

Happy Halloween!

This is a tutorial on how to carve a not so scary pumpkin for Halloween.

It is a flower and leaves design which is a bit complex so it may require some skill.

You can use the YouTube video included to help you out!

Supplies

You will need:

  • Template
  • Carving tools
  • Small knife / scalpel
  • Bowl
  • Spoon / Scraper
  • Pen

Drawing the Design

Download the template and cut out the shapes.

The greyed out areas are the parts of the pumpkin that you will need to cut on the pumpkin, but not all the way through.

The black shapes are the parts where you need to cut / drill all the way through the pumpkin.

You can stick or hold the shapes against the pumpkin and trace around them with a pen.

Carving the Lid

Carve out the lid of the pumpkin and trim it down so that it not visible through the pumpkin at the end.

Scrape the seeds out using your spoon or scraper and place them in a bowl.

If you wish, you can save the seeds and bake them later with a bit of oil and salt.

Make sure you scrape the inside of the pumpkin clean so there is no wet flesh left inside

Carving the Flower

Carve out the circle in the middle of the flower using your carving tools. Cut all the way through.

Using your small knife or scalpel, you can start to carve the petals.

Cut a line in the middle of the petal that is only halfway deep. DO NOT CUT STRAIGHT THROUGH.

Angle the knife at an inward angle and cut from the outer edge of the petal to the middle of the petal.

Do this on both side of the petal.

One you have reached the middle from both sides, gently pry out the pumpkin piece.

You should end up with sides that are sloping down towards the middle of the petal.

Repeat the same process for the rest of the petals.

Carving the Leaves

Once you have done the flowers you can start to cut out the leaves.

Use your carving tool to cut all the way through the flesh as you trace around the leaf shapes.

Repeat until they are all cut out.

Drilling the Holes

Using the drill bit or electric drill, make a hole in the small circles.

Be careful if using an electric drill as it could slip.

Repeat until all the holes are drilled out.

Carving the Stems

Using your knife or scalpel, cut out the stems.

Follow the lines but do not cut all the way through the flesh of the pumpkin.

Carry on until all the stems have been cut.

Your pumpkin should now be complete.

Once done, you can either place a candle or an LED light inside.

Enjoy!
