Floral Paper Quilling Monogram Letter Q

It's been a while since the last time I made a paper quilling project. So for this comeback attempt, I will make a floral paper quilling monogram with the letter Q, for myself. When looking for which plant started with the letter Q, I just found that there is this Quince plant that is close to my name. Let's start and happy quilling!

For this monogram paper quilling project, you're going to need:

1. Scissors: I prefer small-sized one
2. PVAc glue (wood glue)
3. Paper cutter
4. Paper strips or A4: I used 80 gsm colored paper and 120 gsm white paper for the outline and the base paper
5. Tweezers
6. Pencil
7. Ruler
8. Patience

Additional:

• Cutting mat: I cut my paper strips, so a cutting mat makes it easier as a base for cutting the papers
• Glue applicator: I used a small straw to help me apply a small amount of glue on paper. You can also use a toothpick as a glue applicator.
• Cylindrical object to help me make a circle shape (I used a stainless straw and a small plastic straw)

The inspiration for this project was a plant called Quince (Cydonia oblonga) quite similar to my name: Quinzy. For this project, I draw the letter Q with a bold-type font. Then I draw the flower to the letter and also the flow guide for the filling part. When finished, I erased a little bit of the sketch to decrease the opacity. Remember, don't sketch-erase too much that can wrinkle the base paper. You can also print your typography. Set the font to just an outline, and make the font color a faint grey so that the line won't stand out terribly if you miss the line.

After that, I also use a colored pencil to add some color to the flower, but this is optional.

Now we start outlining the sketch. I usually start the outlining from the part that intersects with the letter Q, which is the flower. The outline of the flower was a pink and white paper strip as you can see in the picture.

After that, do the outlining of the main shape: letter Q

For outlining, I've used 120 gsm white paper. I will recommend a heavier paper for the outline as this paper will take the strain of the elements being filled inside the letter. By placing the strips on the outline, I've marked the places where the strip will need to be bent. To curve the paper, you can gently run your finger along it, much like you would do with scissors and ribbon to get that to curl.

Using a straw, I applied a very precise line of glue over the outline of the letter.

When the outline is done, you can either quill in it or around it. An easy and effective way to fill the letters using random quilling elements (circles, marquises, teardrops, etc). In this project, the filling is mostly done with simple curved or straight strips. Then I added small tight coils here and there as an accent. Well, this step is the most exciting yet tiring for me. So please take your time, and believe in the process.

As a comeback project, it was really fun, and refreshing. After a long time of not using my paper strips to make a quilling project, and then decided to make one really for myself is so rewarding.
