Make a floor light using some basic materials and tools.

Difficulty:**---
Time:***--
Coolness:****-

(key:max is *****)

#### Things you'll need ####

>Floor
>Plexiglass (min. 0,5mm thick)
>Coloured transparent plastic A4 sheets
>1 A4 (white) paper
>A4 size (0.4mm thick) cardboard
>Tinfoil
>Some screws
>neon (energy saving bulb)
>plug
>wire
>bulb socket

#### Tools you'll need ####

>Drill
>Electric saw
>Stapler
>Screwdriver
>Scissors
>rule
>marker

####what you need to know before making this####

The 'floor' I used was the floor of my mezanine which divides my room into two 'floors', this made it easier to reach foth sides of it.

I used a low energy consuming neon bulb, it produces very little heat and should not be a fire risk...
But I do not hold responsibility for any damages caused to you or your house as a result of making this project.

Making the Hole in the Floor

***What you'll need for this step***
>Floor
>Drill
>Electric saw

---First you have to decide on what shape you want it to be...
I Suggest you draw up a couple of sketches, also keep in mind
the amount of materials you have available. I wouldnt recommend
to make it bigger than A4 sized because of the materials youre
using.
---Second, you should sketch out a rough drawing of the hole on
the surface that you are cutting(floor).
---Now use the drill to make a hole all the way through the
floorboards so that you can stick the sawblade through.
---Next, saw carefully around the shape you drew...making sure to
keep to the line. If you did this, the piece you cut should
fall out easily.(make sure you keep this piece, it will be very
important in step 4)

There you go...you have the hole.

Preparing the Plexiglass

***What you'll need for this step***

>Plexiglass
>Marker
>Drill

---First place the plexiglass piece over the hole and trace a line
around the edge, making sure to mark 1 cm extra. I made special
'extrusions' where i would drill a hole for screws to go
through later on.

---Then cut carefully along the line(be careful not to keep the
sawblade in one place for too long, as it has a tendency to
melt the plasic.

And now the plexiglass 'window' is ready.

Preparing the Lightbulb

***What you'll need for this step***

>lightbulb
>wire
>plug
>lightbulb socket
>a screwdriver

---Assemble the socket, wire and plug.

---Screw the bulb into place and test it.

Your 'light source' is ready...

Making the 'light' Housing

***What you'll need for this step***

>cardboard
>stapler
>piece that you cut from your floor
>rule
>pen/pencil

---First make a rough sketch of your setup, so you know what
you'll be making.Look at the example i made.

---Then using the ruler, measure the thickness of the piece you
cut from the floor, mark this on the cardboard and draw a line
like in the picture.

---Placing the lightbulb against this line, like in the picture,
maek the height of the bulb and draw a line. Then to make sure
you have enough space, mark draw a last line 1cm above the
previous.

---Now cut out three identical such strips of cardboard like in
the picture.

---Use the stapler to staple these strips around the edge of the
wooden piece,so that the edges meet.

---The housing is now ready, just staple it to the hole in the
floor like indicated in the pictures.

***What you'll need for this step***

>Drill
>Screws
>Scissors
>Transparent plastic sheets
>Plexiglass piece from step 2
>Tinfoil
>Assembled bulb/wire/plug from step 3
>A4 paper
>Screws

---First you have to unattach the wire from the socket an
pass it through the hole left from step 1 and reassemble.
Cut the shape of the housing out in tinfoil, and put it under
the bulb.

---Then put hold the plexiglass in its exact position while you
drill through the small 'extrusions' and into the floor.

---Then use the A4 paper, transparent plastic sheet and cut the
shape of the plexiglass. Stick these identical shapes to the
underside of the plexiglass piece so they hang there
properly and dont fall off.

---Then turn the plexiglass/cloroured sheets over, match the
drilled holes and screw it on.

Pictures and Afterthought

You can make many such lights in the floor.
I made two side-by-side as you can see.

They can also be mounted into walls and would look very nice there
too.

There may always be some fire risk when using the lamp for prolonged periods of time, but I have used mine for 2 days now and had it on for quite long each time and nothing has yet happened.
It doasnt get warmer than 43 C which is what i measured with a thermometer after 4 hours of having it on.

I hope you liked this instructable, please rate it and please vote for it in the contests :D...
