Flatpack Red Wine Bottle Holder
In this instructable, I will explain and show you how to make your own modern wine bottle holder out of insulated copper cables. It's meant to present your bottle of red wine on the table for guests or your partner for dinners.
It replaces the well known woven thatch baskets for more modern decors and houses. It's even bendable, making it easier to store it away.
The things you need:
- About 25 meters of insulated 2.5mm² copper wire
- Some A4 papers for testing shape and dimensions and template
- Long ruler and pencil
- Tape
- Superglue
- Wire cutters
- Wire insulation cutters
- Motivation
Creating Your Template
Experiment with pieces of paper trying to create a wine bottle holder. Keep in mind for the dimensions of the bottle that it would lean back but won't loose stability.
After you made your template, it would be about the size of an A2 paper. Stick 4 A4 papers together to create the A2 paper. We'll use this to draw lines on for a guidance as we're gonna weave the copper wire.
Weaving the Copper Wire
After you made your template, start by drawing lines on the A2 paper like how you want your wires to be woven. This isn't necessary but it helps placing the wires with an equal spacing. I drew my lines 15 mm apart horizontal and 30 mm vertical, making a 60° angle.
After that, start by cutting the wires at the correct length. First do only the longest ones. After that, cut the shorter ones, because those are less important if they aren't inside your template. I recommend to do a big area instead of following along the template. You'll only make it harder for your self, but you'll have a bit of waste.
Tip: Don't worry to much about the spacing when you're reaching the end. You won't notice it in the final result.
Cutting Out the Shape
Cut your template in half and mirror it to the right to have a more symmetric shape. Try to position it so you can cut clean everywhere. Try to avoid cutting close to intersecting wires. But sometimes it's unavoidable.
Caution: Don't pull or twist the wires yet
Use tape to stick the edges together, or if you want to speed things up, you can use superglue right away. Glue all the intersecting wires at the edges together. If you use tape first, you can still do minor adjustments if the wire jumps out of place.
After you connected the edges together, you can try to bend your shape like you did with your template and test it out.
Insulation Removing
Remove about 5 mm of the insulation at all the sides where possible. If there is an intersection to close to the edge, it's better to leave it alone.
Caution: Don't try to pull on the copper itself. Now that the insulation is glued, sometimes it might occur the wire slides out it's insulation.
Now that the wire is exposed, use sandpaper of 120 to remove the sharp edges. Use smoother sand paper to make the shininess come back.
Bottle Placement
Now that you finished your wine bottle holder, you can decorate your table for a festive dinner or a romantic meal.
Personally, I think the wine bottle holder works best with red wine.
If the wine bottle rolls to the side, try to pull on the wires a bit. It's all flexible and easy adaptable on the bottle.
