Flat-Folding Hinged Phone & Pen Stand

I designed a foldable pen holder and phoen stand that uses hinges to collapse completely when not in use. The goal was to create a compact, space-saving desk organizer that's easy to store, transport, or 3D-print without bulky parts. I made it to show how simple folding mechanisms can turn everyday desk items into functional, efficient designs.

Creating Hinges for the Foldable Components

In this step, two different types of hinges were created to be used in the flat-folding desk organizer:

  1. A door hinge for the phone stand
  2. A door hinge was attached to the tall standing structure on the top-left side of the organizer.
  3. This hinge allows the phone stand to open and close smoothly, enabling easy placement and removal of a phone.
  4. The hinge is positioned so that the stand can fold down when not in use, maintaing a compact, space-saving design.
  5. A pin hinge for the pen holder
  6. A pin hinge was used on the central rectangular pen holder.
  7. This hinge allows the pen holder to fold down falt, reducing the amount of space it takes up when the organizer is not in use.
  8. The folding mechanism ensures that the pen holder can be tucked away neatly while remaining stable when in the upright position.

These two hinges make both the phone stand and the pen holder foldable, enhanicng the organizer's portability. The hinges provide controlled movement and stability, ensuring smooth operation and longevity of the folding components.

Designing the Phone Stand

The phone stand is made from a large rectangular backrest attached to the tall left structure with door hinges, so it can fold up for use and fold down flat when not needed. A small rectangular piece pops out from the backrest to hold the phone in place and tucks back in when not in use. The base has a recessed spot for the folded stand, keeping the organizer compact and clean. The hinge placement and overall design make the stand sturdy while still allowing smooth, simple movement.

Designing the Pen Holder

The pen holder was built by creating four rectangles around a central square to form the walls of the holder. Holes were made in the base so the folded pen holder can rest neatly when not in use. Pin hinges were added to allow the holder to fold down flat, keeping the organizer compact while still being easy to access when needed. The design balances stability and functionality, letting the pen holder fold and unfold smoothly.

3D-Printing the Design

Once the phone stand, pen holder, and organizer base are fully designed with hinges and resting spots, 3D print all the parts according to the model. After printing, assemble the hinges so the phone stand and pen holder can fold and unfold smoothly. Test the movement to make sure the phone stand folds into its base spot and the pen holder rests properly in its holes. Once assembled, the organizer is ready to use. Enjoy!
