Fixing a Ceiling Light
Here is a little project of mine fixing my bathroom light !
Indeed, the plastic cover that holds the light and the glass flush with the ceiling broke recently and after scouring the internet for hours, I understood that I was not going to find a similar one.
I decided that I would make a new one using both of 3D modeling and my 3D printer.
So here began the conception :
Supplies
- a caliper
- a 3d modeling software
- a 3D printer
- 3D filament
- Sand paper
- Primmer
- Paint
3D Modeling and Printing
I will not go into too many details about the 3D modeling since no one would have the exact same part to replace.
Using the different dimensions taken with my caliper I was able to make a resembling 3d model. Once the 3D model was made I used Cura Slicer and sent it to my 3D printer.
Sanding Phase
Once the print was off the printer it was a bit rough so I decided to use 220 grit sand paper to remove the biggest irregularities and then used 400 as a finishing grit.
Ensuing the sanding I used acetone to properly remove any grease and prepare it for paint.
Painting
Little paint booth tip :
If you plan on painting a small part and do not have a proper place for it I would advise you to use a shoe box, it works great as a little paint booth. Using some metal wire you can even suspend the part from the top of the shoe box.
Painting the part :
I first did two coats of primmer in order to get rid of the last little flaws. Once the primer was fully cured, I used a chrome paint in order to match the look of the old broken part.
Installation and Final Result
All in all, I really enjoyed doing this small project. Even though it was quite modest, I still got to use different processes which was very interesting.
