Fitted Mattress Groundsheet
This guide will help you make a lightweight groundsheet that fits an inflatable mattress perfectly.
Though you can simply use a plain piece of material, fitting the mattress into folds in the groundsheet, allows better protection, because the mattress will always be above the groundsheet.
Materials & Tools
- A sheet of 45 gram 1.10 meters by 2.5 meters TYVEK (get a large enough sheet to fit your mattress with some excess)
- PRYM Black 14mm Eyelets with washers
Tools:
- Pencil
- Hobby knife
- Metal ruler
- 90 degrees ruler
- Hammer
- Anvil (optional)
- Clamp (optional)
Cut a Straight Line at the Top of the Sheet
Since when cutting sheets from a roll of material leaves a skewed edge, you should start by drawing a line perpendicular to the straight edge, and then cut the remaining material.
Cut to Width
Choose your largest mattress, and while leaving about 7cm of material from the each edge, cut to width.
Create the First Fold
Fold an overlap in the sheet about 25cm from the top edge.
Crease the edge.
Add the Eyelets
While holding the two layers of TYVEK, create a hole with the supplied punch.
Fasten the grommet over the hole.
Repeat for the second corner.
Cut to Length, and Add Grommets
Cut to length leaving 25cm for the fold, crease, and add grommets.
Fold
Fold width-wise.
First fold to two, and then fold again from each side towards the center, creating an accordion fold.
Then, from either one of the edges, fold towards the other edge, taking care to turn over the sheet each time, also creating an accordion fold.
Make sure the last fold doesn't start too close to the grommet.
You're Done!
The groundsheet is finished, and is very lightweight and small
Enjoy sleeping outdoors!
