Finding/Turning on the IPhone Flashlight

Apple is tech but not always tech-friendly. Finding the flashlight can be difficult, especially if you are not as knowledgeable about the iPhone. Scroll down to find helpful instructions about how to find the flashlight in two different ways on your phone.

Steps 1-4 teach you how to find the iPhone flashlight button on your lock screen when your phone is still locked. (Your iPhone is locked if you have not yet entered your password or Face ID).

Steps 5-9 teach you how to find the iPhone flashlight button when your iPhone is already unlocked. (Your iPhone is unlocked if you have already inputted your password or used Face ID).

Supplies

  1. Any Apple technological device

Phone Lockscreen

Lightly tap your phone to show the main screen, otherwise known as the lock screen. Not the page where all the apps and widgets are. Instead, just go to the main page before you open it with your passcode or Face ID.

Finding the Flashlight Button

On the bottom left of that screen, there is a slightly transparent circular icon. It has a flashlight symbol in the middle of it.

Turning the Flashlight Button ON

Hold down the button for about one second until you feel a light vibration from the phone. This vibration is an indicator that the flashlight button has been turned on.

The button will also go from being slightly transparent with a darker background of the circle to now being a white background with a purple flashlight symbol in the middle. This is another indicator that the Flashlight button is now on.

Turning the Flashlight Button OFF

To turn the button off. Simply hold down again until you feel a vibration, and that is an indicator that the button is now turned off.

Find the Control Center

Now onto finding the flashlight when the iPhone is unlocked. (Your iPhone is unlocked if you have already inputted your password or used Face ID).

On the main home screen page (as seen above), pull down from the top right corner. Pull towards the bottom of the phone, not left or right. This will give you access to the Control Center.

Once in the Control Center, find the flashlight button. It might be in a different spot/order, but it will still be somewhere on this page. The circled icon in the image above is the button.

Turning the Flashlight On

To turn the flashlight on, hold down until you feel a slight vibration. It should only take about one second. Once you feel this vibration, lift your finger. Your flashlight button should now be glowing white, and the flashlight should be on.

Changing the Brightness of the Flashlight

If you hold the flashlight button down again, it will give you the option to change the brightness strength. Above, I have examples of what all four levels look like on your phone screen. If the bottom level is highlighted, that means that the flashlight is currently at its lowest strength. If all four tiers are highlighted white, then the flashlight is at full strength.

An example of why the brightness levels are important is because different settings may require different levels. For example, in a dimly lit restaurant, you may not need as much brightness as you do when your power is out and you are looking around your house.

To escape the brightness settings, simply touch anywhere outside of the brightness levels. Anywhere towards the top or side of the phone, lightly, and it will bring you back to the Control Center.

Turning Off the Flashlight

To turn the flashlight off from the Control Center is the exact same process as turning the button on. Hold it down for one second, and the button should go back to being dark. This is an indicator that the flashlight has now been turned off.
