I work as an engineer at one of the high tech companies. In our city there is an annual light festival. Since our company was one of the sponsors they also decided to display the art work of amateurs, and I off course submitted my proposal(see the draft I drew on the piece of paper). Despite that this art work has quite deep philosophical meaning, energy circulating around and through us, it is also quite interesting engening project. So I decided to share some of the technical details of it here in case anyone is interested in creating something similar.

Supplies

1. 3 wooden men figures https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/model-h-30-cm-man-1-stuk/9200000040215123/?s2a=

2. Indoor Traffic Mirror. https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/vidaxl-verkeersspiegel-voor-binnen-30-cm/9200000058716907/?s2a=

3. Monitor mount for desks. https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/monitorbeugel-14-24-inch-max-10kg-zwart/9200000117615202/?s2a=

4. Fiber optics projector. https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/glasvezel-projector-45w-sensorische-therapie-glasvezel-verlichting-autisme-gehandicapt-speciale-behoeften-ouderen-zintuiglijke-kamer/9200000127106488/?bltgh=vGMyCAVpRQwtYufIuWpHRQ.2_29.31.ProductImage.

5. LED Panel 62x62 RGB+CCT 36W Multicolour + White https://www.ledpaneelgroothandel.nl/led-paneel-62-62-rgbww?gclid=Cj0KCQiA8aOeBhCWARIsANRFrQFGg3zGpwM601l2sFYF2kLPc5bdh2ND5Fu3uDCFkbccTqN790T_ctEaAlosEALw_wcB

6. Various supplies from the hardware store like wooden bords, sanding tools, oil, paint.

7. Acrilic cubes,set of 3.

8. Acrylic rods in various colors.

Making a First Proto.

So I started with drawing the concept which I had in mind. Later I made a paper representation of the future work, and only after that I started ordering materials. On the last photo you can see the acrilic pedestals and the figurs on them. At this point I new I can move forward. I found the planning and visualization of the concept really important. It helped me what I shouldaim for, not deviate too much and prevented over orderingof the materials.

Making the Wooden Stand.

The wooden stand was made from 2 pieces. One was used to place the led panel on it and attach the fiber optics projector. And on top I made a cap where I drilled multiple holes for the acrilic rods(lots of holes). I sanded the wood and painted it black with adding some gliter to it to add an extra glow effect for the final artwork.

Attaching and Preparing the Mirror.

I drilled multiple holes in the mirror(since it is made of some sort of plastic it was quiteeasy) and attaced it to the monitor stand. I screwed the stand into the top part of the wooded table.

Preparing the Wooded Figures and Rods

I disassembled all wooden figures, dilled and sanded holes inside their torso and put them back together. Not an easy task to attach all the springs back together, but the result was worth it. On the piscure you can see some of the tools I used for sanding the holes. I also oiled the figures to give them more vibrant look, see photos before and after on the test figure.
I ordered 1 m long acrylic rods, I used a kitchen knife to make a mark where I want to break them and did it with my hands. Once the mark of few millimeters is made it is really easy to break them, later I sanded the top of each.

Final Assembly

  1. I guided the fiber trought 3 openings on the top cover. then all the fiber was guided trough the wooden figures. Finally fiber was inserted into the mirror.
To create the reflection effect I guided the fiber into one hole bended it and inserted it back into the neighboring hole. Later, I cut all the fiber to create the uniform reflection pattern.
  2. I inserted the acrilic rods in no particular order, just tried to achive a nice uniform coverage. The rods simbolised energy coming from the Earth.
  3. I glued the acrylic stands into the cover.
  4. I also glued wooden figures onto the acrilic stands. The first figure was screwed into the wood to inself.
  5. Both optical fiber projector and LED panel were put in the slow color changing mode. I have 2 remote controls controlling these devices.

You can see the final result in the video. I was impressed with how nice the light travels trought the acrilic rods and the fiber.

Some Tips I Learned on the Way

  1. Safety first. I intentionally lifted up the table on the metal legs and did not cover it fully with the cap to allow for air circulation. Also I left some of the holes on the top cover without rods in them, that way all the heat build up from fiber optics projector and led panel can be dissipated. Both of these light sources generate little to no heat but just in case I made it.
  2. To allow fiber optics to glow more I took the scissors and made small cutes trought out the fiber so one could see the glow better.

All in all I really enjoyed working on this project. It turned out to be really colorful and dynamic color changing just adds a lot.

Hope you found some interesting information for your future projects and feel free to ask me any clarification questions, would be happy to help) Have fun engineering!

Explanation of the Artwork

You Gave Me Wings_1~3.jpg
This is the explanation of the artwork:
Every idea is like a light path, shining bright with millions of beams passing between each one of us. If you can harness the right ideas, you can raise others up to illuminate the world and achieve your dreams. “‘You Gave Me Wings"(original name which was used for the festival) uses a plethora of light sources to represent how our ideas come from multiple experiences.
