Felted Bunny
Hello! This instructable is how to make a cute felted bunny! The base is made using soft air-dry clay to conserve needlefelt material, maintain lightness, and make it less time consuming to felt everything.
Supplies
- Soft air-dry clay
- Needlefelt (1 solid colour, or 2-3 colours for secondary colours)
- Plastic eyes or black needlefelt
- Felting needle(s)
- Felting mat
- Glue (optional)
- Needle handle (optional)
Create Your Clay Base
Use your air-dry clay to form a basic shape for the bunny. Mine included a head, a body, and two front legs. The ears, tail, and hind legs can be added using needlefelt later. Your head can be detached from the body and attached later with felt, or you can have one solid piece. Allow to dry, (approximately 1-3 hours) depending on the type of clay.
Wrap the Clay Tightly With Needlefelt
Wrap the bulk of the clay with a solid colour needlefelt, and collect all of the excess felt at the bottom. Use the colour that you want the majority of your bunny to be.
Fasten the Needlefelt Around the Clay and Felt It On
Use your felting needle to poke the bottom of the bunny to hold the needlefelt in place. You only need to shallowly poke the surface of the clay to keep it in place. Try to keep most of the pokes in the bottom so most of the surface remains smooth and fluffy. Aim to cover the whole rabbit with felt.
Take 3 Pieces of Felt for Your Ears and Tail
Take 3 pieces of felt, 2 around the same size and 1 slightly smaller. The 2 larger pieces will be your ears, and the smaller piece is the tail, so pick the colours that you want for those.
Felt Your Ears and Tail
Place one of the pieces onto a felting mat and poke it into the right shape. Repeat for all 3 pieces. You want to make two long pieces for the ears, and a small circular piece for the tail. Keep a bit of unfelted wool at the end so it's easy to attach onto the body.
Attach Your Ears and Tail to the Body
Place your ears in the right place, and felt the unfelted wool at the end to attach it onto the head. Likewise, attach the tail to the back of the bunny.
Poke Holes for the Eyes
Use your felting needle to repeatedly stab at where you want the eyes to be.
Attach Your Eyes
Insert the plastic eyes into the holes that you made earlier. If your plastic eyes don't have backings like mine, you can simply use glue to attach them on. If you don't have plastic eyes, you can also use a bit black needlefelt to create an eye shape and felt it on.
