Faux Bow T-Shirt Mod

DSC_2261.JPG

This t-shirt modification was inspired by this bow back shirt. I thought it was so cute, but I'm always one to go a little overboard and that is how this shirt came about. It ended up taking a lot longer to sew than I initially thought, so it is a good project to do while you are just relaxing and watching a movie.

Supplies

Supplies:

  • T-Shirt (I got one for $1.50 at Daiso, so if you know what Daiso is, you can get one there.)
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Needle (that matches extra fabric)
  • Thread
  • Measuring Tape
  • Fabric Chalk
  • Extra Fabric (I used part of an old pink t-shirt that was already cut up)

Cut Shirt

Start by cutting the strips along the sides and sleeves of the shirt.

  1. Turn shirt inside out and measure from (under the arm) the bottom of the shirt to the edge of the sleeve. Mine was a nice round 22 inches.
  2. Mark every 2 inches (or whatever works out for your total length).
  3. At each mark, make a, centered, line that is about 3 inches.
  4. Cut the lines. I had 10 slits.

Sew on Fabric Strips

Now to sew on the extra fabric to make faux bows along the sides and sleeves of the shirt.

  1. Cut out a piece of your fabric that is about 1 inch by 3/4 inch. (This will be longer than 1 inch if it is going over seems such as the bottom of the shirt or the sleeves.)
  2. Wrap the piece the long way around one of your cut out sections. You are working inside out so you want the ends of the piece to face you now so it will face the inside of the finished shirt.
  3. Fold the ends of the piece together.
  4. Sew the ends together. I initially tried to just sew the little piece and quickly realized this was hard and really had no purpose anyway. So make sure the piece is in the exact middle of the 3 inch slit when you sew it in place.
  5. There, it is done and now you have to do it over and over again.
  6. (No photo) I also did this on top of the sleeves. I had 5 slits on the top of the sleeve and they were also approximately 2 inches apart. Also, I chose to cut out the neck of the shirt because it gets tight and uncomfortable. If you choose to do this, do it before cutting your slits.

I think this looks awesome with a nice bright, contrasting color, but you can choose to do something more subtle, or even use a piece of ribbon! Enjoy your awesome new shirt.
