Fashionable Jeans Also Known As Bell Bottoms

Hi, my name is Jasmin Daigneau I’m 15 years old, and located in Craig Colorado. I have always loved to sew. When I saw one of my friends with a pair of bell bottoms I feel in love with them but realized they were extremely expensive for a pair of jeans. So I got crafty taking a $35 dollar pair of jeans and about $5 for fabric I created my own pair for much cheaper and they are one of a kind.

Supplies

  • Pair of jeans
  • desired fabric
  • Jean fabric
  • Sewing Machine
  • Pins
  • Seam ripper
  • Measuring tool

First things first is to get a well-fitting pair of jeans. It doesn't matter what brand just know that every different style and brand has different sized and shaped legs so depending on how flared you want your jeans you’re going to have to adjust how much color fabric to put on your jeans I personally use Old Navy boot cut jeans.

now the next thing you wanna do is mark how high you want the fabric to go. I personally like mine to go right below my knee.

Now you want to use a seem riper to undo all stitches up to the mark where u want you fabric to end.

when cutting your fabric you are going to want it a little bigger. For example when cutting my fabric I measured 12 inches wide knowing after I do my one inch hem it will end up about 10 inches wide. Then I measured 17 inches high because my end length needs to be 15 inches. The reason you want it about 2 extra inches on all sides is because when doing your hem it takes away from both the width and the height because it is a triangle.

The next step is to cut a piece of Jean fabric the same size as your color fabric. I added this extra piece of fabrics to add more structure to the jeans. I found with out this the jeans don’t flare as much because the color fabric is so thin it just folds and doesn’t show as much of a flared look.

This next step is not necessary, but I could it makes the rest of the process a lot easier. So what I did is pin the two fabrics together and sew them together on all three edges. Just a simple trait stitch does the trick. When sewing to keep a even straight line all the way around I had the edge of the foot (the piece holding the fabric down) lined up with an outer edge of the fabric.

Next you want a hem. The way I did it was by measuring out 1 inch at the bottom folding it over then folding it over it’s self this prevents any fraying. Then I sew across the bottom with the boot ( the piece holding the fabric down) on the outer edge.

Next step is to attach the fabric to the Jean. The way I could easiest is to flip the Jean inside out and pin the piece of fabric lining the edges of the Jean and the color fabric piece together. The way I sewed with this is still a simple strait stitch but keeping the edge of the fabric lined up it’s the 5/8’s line.

Now just repeat that with the other side and you have yourself a pair of fashionable bell bottoms.
